  • Bishops blank AJ, halt Vols...

    Class AA soccer power Bishop England of Charleston foiled Andrew Jackson’s postseason soccer hopes with a 6-0 win over the Volunteers at Jack Cantey Stadium.Bishop England opened a 2-0 halftime lead and added four second-half goals to seal the Class AA Lower State third-round win Saturday afternoon.George Khourey, who opened the scoring for the 15-5-2 Bishops, tallied twice to pace the win. Taylor Daylami also had a goal and an assist for B-E.“We ran into a buzz saw,” Andrew Jackson High soccer coach Randy Jordan said of the match.

  • Bruins' baseball post draws...

    The new Lancaster High School baseball coach will be selected from a field of 12 applicants.

    The cut-off for receiving applications for the job was a week ago. The job came open at the end of the Bruins’ 2008 season last month. Earlier in the LHS season, veteran coach Steve Williams, the Bruins’ baseball coach since 1993, announced his retirement.

  • LHS honors spring stars

    Lancaster High School capped its 2007-08 sports year, saluting spring sports stars Tuesday night in the LHS auditorium.

    Award recipients, letter winners and participation awards were presented in eight sports.

    Several sports had dual winners, including baseball where senior outfielder-pitcher Nick Ferguson was named MVP and earned all-region honors.

    Ferguson, headed to Spartanburg Methodist College to play baseball, was also presented the Friends of Lancaster Baseball Academic Award.

    Indian Land High School senior golfer Chase Hunter etched his name in Warriors’ athletic history at the Class A state golf tournament earlier this week.Hunter, with a three-over 147, won the Class A individual state championship at The Links at Stoney Point Golf Club in Greenwood.

    When Lancaster High School girls basketball star Miteka Trueheart made her recent recruiting visit to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, it was, in basketball terms, “a slam dunk.”“The school is nice and I felt like part of the family,” said Trueheart, who signed with the Conference USA Blazers on Wednesday at LHS. “There was a nice vibe there. We just seem to bond.“The basketball program is up and coming,” she said. “I like the team and coaches.
