BUFORD – Buford High School’s athletic best took top billing as the Jackets held their annual athletic awards night in the BHS gym on Thursday night.A host of athletes were honored, with senior baseball star Christian Dickson among the elite.Dickson, the Jackets MVP, was named the Conference VIII-AA Player of the Year.

The ability to play small ball will play a major role in the success of the 2008 Lancaster American Legion Post 31 junior baseball team, according to second-year coach Michael Anderson.“We have to execute the little things in each game,” said Anderson who guided the junior team to a runner-up finish in League V and a postseason bid last season.The Lancaster junior program is in its fourth campaign.“It’s important for us to be sharp on the fundamentals of the game,” he said.

Buford High School golfer Trevor Banks cashed in on his opportunity to capture the Class AA golf individual state championship.Banks, a BHS junior, shot a four-over 148 to post the Class AA state medalist at the two-day tournament at the Village Green Golf Course in Inman on Tuesday.Banks shot 75-73 over two days to notch the state title by a shot over Broome’s Tyler Comer and Zach Grossman of Bishop England as each shot 149.Banks’ first day saw him post a 75 on the windy course.

Indian Land’s Wesley Scott and Lancaster High’s Sha’Quandra Waters each earned a silver medal as state runners-up in their respective events at the state track meet on Saturday at Spring Valley High School.Waters, a LHS freshman, heaved the shot 36 feet, 3.75 inches.
