  • Warriors net senior night hoops...

    INDIAN LAND Indian Land High School basketball senior night was one for the Warriors to savor on Thursday.

    The IL teams completed a season’s hoops sweep of the rival Buford Yellow Jackets.

    The Lady Warriors rolled to a 78-40 victory and the IL boys capped the notable night with a 62-55 win over the Jackets.

    Each game followed a similar trend for the winning Warriors. The IL teams took control in the third quarter to take command on the way to victory.

  • Citadel signs IL's Seigler

    INDIAN LAND A high school media center is supposed to be one of the quietest places on campus during the school day, but for a brief, special moment that changed Friday afternoon at Indian Land High School.

    Just after ILHS senior offensive lineman Sam Seigler signed to play football at The Citadel, an admiring group of students and teachers applauded the moment.

  • Breaking News Winter storm...

    The forecast for a winter storm forced Lancaster County School District officials to cancel two high school basketball games scheduled for Friday night.

    The Lancaster-Spring Valley Region IV-AAAA game scheduled for the Lancaster High School gym was postponed late Friday morning when Spring Valley High School officials contacted LHS and said they would be unable to travel after Richland County School officials canceled all after-school activities.

  • Lancers launch season with sweep

    The University of South Carolina at Lancaster Lancers’ baseball team opened its second season in impressive fashion Monday.

    The Lancers swept a twin bill from the host Limestone junior varsity in Gaffney.

    USCL prevailed, 3-1 and 7-3 over the Junior Saints.

    In the opener, Jarrett Miller worked six innings, tossing a two-hitter and striking out eight for the win. Miller allowed two walks and hit a batter.

    Harrison Culp went two-thirds of an inning and yielded a walk.

    Rick Davis, with a third of an inning, notched the Lancers’ save.

  • Rams down IL for Upstate...

    Chesterfield will be shooting for its fifth straight Class A state wrestling title this weekend.

    The Rams earned the berth to defend their title, defeating Indian Land, 41-36 for the Class A Upper State championship at CHS on Saturday.

    The IL Warriors, 20-12, fell to the Rams in the Upper State title match.

    CHS forged a 41-12 lead and forfeited the final four weight classes before taking the win.

  • Landrum ends BHS's...

    Buford had an unexpected short stay in the Class A Upper State wrestling tournament at Chesterfield High School on Saturday.

    The Jackets were an opening-round casualty, falling to Landrum 39-34.

    “This was a match we could have won, but it didn’t help us not having two wrestlers we were counting on, but they didn’t show and it cost us,” BHS coach John Mahaffey said. “This was disappointing and until we get that changed, our program won’t reach its potential.”

  • BHS senior night sweep

    The surging Buford Yellow Jackets made BHS basketball senior night special, sweeping Conference III-A foe North Central on Tuesday night.

    The Lady Jackets launched the region broom job with a 53-39 win and the BHS boys capped play with a 46-37 win.

    The Lady Jackets, 3-8, 5-12, used a solid third-period charge to take control of the contest.

    “We turned up the pressure on them and that gave us some easy scores,” BHS coach T.J. Armbrust said. “We were able to knock down some shots early and that also opened up the middle for us.”

  • Jackets take two from Panthers

    Buford High School made a clean hardwood sweep in Conference III-A basketball play Saturday in the BHS gym.

    The Jackets took two from McBee, winning 55-46 in the girls’ game and 62-50 in the nightcap.

    The Jackets finished strong for the 12-point win over the Panthers.

    Buford held a 27-15 edge at the break, but McBee used a 13-4 run to open the second half to make it a 31-28 game.

    BHS, 7-14, 4-6, took a 35-30 lead after three periods and cruised to the win.

  • Lancers sign Cycs' Clack

    The decision to offer Chester High’s Kody Clack a baseball scholarship probably wasn’t a difficult one for USC-Lancaster coaches. Deciding where to play him once he gets on campus might be, though.

    Clack signed with the Lancers on Wednesday.

    During his time as a Cyclone, one of Clack’s strengths has been his versatility.

    “Kody is a great player with great instincts. He’s played every position for us,” said Chester coach Dennis Jensen.

  • County trio picking Colts'...

    A trio of Lancaster County prep football coaches predict an Indianapolis Colts’ win tonight in Super Bowl XLIV in Miami.

    Buford’s Mike Wells, The Lancaster News’ Coach of the Year for the 2009 high school football season, is calling for a Colts’ win along with Lancaster High School coach Bennie McMurray and Mike Mayer, the Indian Land head football coach.

    AJ’s Elmer Bench is forecasting a Saints’ upset in New Orleans’ first-ever visit to the Super Bowl.
