  • AJ Vols take pair from rival BHS

    BUFORD Andrew Jackson tuned for Region IV-AA basketball play, rolling to a pair of solid road wins over county rival Buford on Tuesday night.

    The Lady Volunteers took a 50-39 win and the AJ boys completed the sweep with a 61-35 victory.

    AJ started fast in the nightcap, building a 23-8 edge after one period as Drew Gardner hit nine of his 13 points in the opening period. Gerard Brace, who paced the Vols with 16, netted six in the opening period as did Tremaine Jackson.

  • Vikings pound Bruins on mat

    Lancaster High launched the 2010 portion of its 2009-10 wrestling schedule with a tough night in Pontiac on Tuesday.

    Spring Valley won all but three matches on the way to a easy win over the Bruins, who fell to 1-5 with the region loss.

    “We had a tough night coming back from the break,” LHS coach Jeff Foo said. “We were up against a strong team and they took it to us.”

    Chris Stevenson and Gabe Campo had the lone pins for LHS.

    LHS will compete in the Bearcat tournament at Rock Hill High School tonight and Saturday.

  • Bruins jolt FM Jackets

    The Lancaster Bruins launched the 2010 part of their basketball schedule with a sweet sweep Tuesday night.

    LHS avenged a pair of earlier home losses to Fort Mill, taking a non-region varsity twin bill from the Yellow Jackets.

    The 9-3 Bruins capped the hardwood broom job with a 65-64 overtime win over the 10th-ranked Yellow Jackets.

    Lancaster, which dropped a 64-62 overtime loss to FM at the LHS gym on Dec. 11, appeared headed for another loss to the Yellow Jackets as it trailed 18-5 after a period of play.

  • Sullivan Middle tops Rumble in...

    Sullivan Middle School of Rock Hill captured the title in the second annual Rumble in the Hive middle school wrestling tournament at the Buford High School gym.

    Sullivan fashioned a 4-0 mark to capture top honors in the one-day tournament Dec. 19.

    Long Middle School of Cheraw finished second with a 3-1 record and Nation Ford Middle School of Fort Mill was third with a 3-1 showing.

  • Panthers honor Keenan

    The Carolina Panthers have honored Lancaster High School standout student-athlete Sam Keenan as a 2009 Carolina Panthers Community Captain.

    The Carolina Panthers Community Captain program recognizes high school football student-athletes in the Carolinas  who excel in the classroom, in the community and on the field.

    Keenan, a three-year letterman and two-year starter at tight end for the Bruins, was honored during pre-game festivities at the Panthers’ final regular-season home game with the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at Bank of America Stadium.

  • Lancers cap fall season rated...

    The fall of 2009 proved to be an unprecedented time for the University of South Carolina at Lancaster golf program.

    The Lancers ended the season 12th in the nation as an NJCAA member.

    Odessa College out of Odessa, Texas finished in the top spot.

    USCL’s No. 12 ranking marks the highest achievement to date  in the Lancers golfers’ short four years as a junior college program.

  • Vols sweep Knights, advance to...

    The host Andrew Jackson teams advanced to the championship round in opening round play in the annual Comporium Christmas Classic in the Vols’ gym on Tuesday night.

    The Lady Volunteers downed North Central for the third time this season, taking a 53-31 win  over the Lady Knights.

    The AJ girls opened an early lead after one, 11-6, and steadily pulled away for the 22-point win.

    The Lady Vols led 22-18 at the half and held a 30-27 spread with a period to play.

    AJ sealed the issue with a 23-4 final period run for the 53-31 win.

  • Lady Jackets down Lions in York...

    Buford had mixed results Wednesday in separate holiday basketball tournaments.

    The Lady Jackets, coming off a lopsided loss to Chapman in a two-day tournament at the York Cougar Christmas tournament, rebounded to top Conference III-A foe Lewisville 46-44.

    The Buford boys weren’t as fortunate as the Jackets dropped a 10-point loss to Class AA foe Central of Pageland.

    The BHS girls, who fell to CHS 64-31 on Tuesday in York, rebounded to top the Lady Lions to take consolation honors at the York tourney.

  • Devils, Rams take titles in AJ...

    KERSHAW  A couple of Conference III-A teams captured titles in the annual Comporium Christmas Classic at Andrew Jackson High School on Wednesday night.

    Great Falls took the boys’ crown, downing the host Vols, and the Chesterfield High Lady Rams notched the girls’ championship with a 48-29 victory over AJ.

    Great Falls proved too strong for the host Vols as the Red Devils rolled to a 59-34 win to cap the two-day holiday tourney at AJ.

    Great Falls held a 14-10 lead after one period, but on the strength of an 18-9 run forged a 32-19 halftime lead.

  • News salutes 2009’s...

    Two Buford High School athletes are The Lancaster News’ 2009 Athletes of the Year.

    Buford High School softball star Jena Hallman, who as a junior led BHS to its first-ever state softball title, is The News’ Female Athlete of the Year.

    Trevor Banks, who won his second straight state medalist honor in golf, is the Male Athlete of the Year.
