  • Bruins, Vols notch wins

    BUFORD Lancaster and Andrew Jackson notched first-round wins to open play in the second annual Jacket Invitational preseason boys basketball tournament at Buford High School on Monday night.

    Lancaster and AJ each advanced to the tournament semifinals with wins.

    Lancaster placed four players in double figures on the way to an 89-52 win over Class AA Cheraw in the evening’s opening session.

    LHS held a 16-13 edge after one period before breaking open the game with a 32-17 second-quarter run to take a 48-30 intermission advantage on the Braves.

    Two Lancaster area teams are listed among the top 10 in preseason high school basketball polls.

    Indian Land is No. 2 in the girls Class A poll, while Great Falls is listed third in the boys Class A state poll.

    Indian Land, 19-6 last season, captured the Conference III-A title with a 12-0 mark. The Lady Warriors were eliminated in the second round of the Class A Upper State playoffs.

    Great Falls, the Class A state runner-up to Calhoun County last March, is led by veteran coach John Smith, a Lancaster native and former Blue Hurricanes basketball standout.

  • Small fry South stars rally for...

    The Lancaster County small fry South football all-stars rallied from an 8-0 deficit to post a 16-8 comeback win over Rock Hill on Thursday night at foggy Lancaster Memorial Stadium.

    Rock Hill, which had defeated the Lancaster County small fry North team 14-6 earlier in the week at Rock Hill’s District Three Stadium, appeared to be on its way early.

  • Tigers golfers snag win

    The Clemson Tigers roared to victory in the eighth annual Big Thursday Scholarship golf tournament Thursday at the Lancaster Golf Club.

    The Tigers’ golfers registered a 9.5-5.5 win in the event which marked Clemson’s second win.

    A year ago, the Gamecocks prevailed with an 11-6 win, but the 2009 tournament belonged to the Tigers.

    “They whipped us pretty good today,” said Larry Honeycutt, a USC golfer who helps coordinate the event.

    High school hoops will be in the front court for a three-day run starting Monday at the Buford High School gym.

    Buford hosts its second annual Yellow Jacket Preseason Invitational with four games on tap each day.

    Play opens Monday with action starting at 4 p.m. Play tips off again Tuesday at 4 p.m.

    Wednesday has four games on tap starting at 11 a.m.

    Play Wednesday has an earlier starting time because the Lancaster County School District begins its annual Thanksgiving holiday break that day.

  • BHS cheer goes for gold

    The Buford High School cheer squad has been a pleasant surprise this fall in the Yellow Jackets’ competition.

    Buford, after missing the 2008 state finals, is headed back to state after placing in the top six at the Class AA Lower State competition last week at Airport High School in Columbia.

    “We have a young team, but they’ve absolutely been a big surprise this season,” Buford High School coach Julie Thompson said. “This group is quite the overachievers.”

  • Mite stars roll to 29-8 victory...

    The Lancaster County mite all-stars launched their football postseason hopes, rolling to a 29-8 win over Fairfield County at Fairfield Central High School on Monday night.

    Joseph Massey scored a touchdown and heaved a 50-yard touchdown pass to Evan Flynn to lift Lancaster County to the 21-point victory.

    Lewis Lindsay scored a pair of touchdowns in the win and Man Man Watts scored on three conversions for the winners.

  • Gators snap LHS hopes

    GOOSE CREEK, Revenge of the Gators was the Lancaster Bruins’ Friday 13th postseason nightmare.

    Goose Creek avenged a 28-20 Class AAAA Div. II football playoff loss to Lancaster with a 48-0 victory over LHS at John Fulmer Stadium on Friday night.

    One of the main Gators’ menaces was freshman fullback Mike Myers, who much like the character of the same name in Halloween horror flicks, was a demon to the Bruins.

    High school basketball takes the spotlight starting Monday afternoon in the Buford High School gym.

    Buford will host its second annual Yellow Jacket Preseason Invitational with four games on tap each day.

    “We felt real good about our first year with this tournament and we feel we have another solid field for this season,” said tournament director Neil Couch, who also coaches the Junior Jackets basketball team.

    Play opens Monday with action starting at 4 p.m. Play tips off Tuesday at 4 p.m.
