    Late winter is not your ideal time for a Palmetto State beach weekend, but Indian Land High School wrestling coach Mike Kersey will likely tell you different.

    Kersey said his four days at North Myrtle Beach High School where the 22nd North-South Classic was held over the weekend was a mat beach blast.

    For Kersey, it was more about vocation than vacation.

  • Bruins booters earn title in...

    The Red Rose Classic is back where it first had its first bud.

    The annual Lancaster County high school preseason soccer tournament will be played at Lancaster Memorial Stadium next season.

    The LHS Bruins captured the fourth annual championship of the tournament, which has a traveling trophy to the annual winner, with a 2-1 win over 2009 champion Indian Land on Saturday afternoon at the Warriors’ Reservation.

    LHS, which went 4-0 in the three-day tournament, defeated the Warriors 2-1 to capture the title and return the tournament to the Bruins’ field.

  • Jackets edge Vols in extra...

    Jacob Jamison raced home on a throwing error to lift Buford to a hard-fought 3-2 win over county rival Andrew Jackson at Buford Park on Monday night.

    Jamison walked to open the BHS eighth. A Ricky Lewis sacrifice bunt moved Jamison to second, and on a attempted steal of third, he dashed home when the catcher’s throw sailed into left field.

    Lewis, who worked four frames, was the winner, allowing a run, three hits and four walks. He fanned four. Colt Ellis hurled four innings, allowing a run, three hits and two walks. He whiffed five.

  • Lady Jackets win tourney

    Defending Class A state champion Buford High School picked up where it left off last spring in the Lancaster County Preseason Softball Invitational at Springdale Park on Saturday.

    Buford went unbeaten in the preseason high school softball tournament to capture the championship.

    The Lady Jackets downed Class AAAA county rival Lancaster High School 9-4 to wrap up the title.

    Teams, for the first time, were working with the pitching rubber moved back three feet from 40 to 43.

  • Lancers split with Surry in...

    The University of South Carolina at Lancaster Lancers split a four-game series with the Surry Knights over the weekend.

    USCL capped the series, dropping two games on Sunday, 3-1 and 12-11.

  • Unbeaten Bruins bid for title...

    The unbeaten Lancaster Bruins’ soccer team moved their mark to 3-0 in the Red Rose Classic with a 2-1 win over 2010 tournament host Indian Land on Friday night at IL’s Reservation.

    The match was a battle of tourney unbeatens, but the Bruins snapped a scoreless halftime draw with two second-half goals and allowed only one score.

    Matt White scored LHS’s first goal. Jaden Driggers assisted Bruins’ senior Alex Roach on the second score and LHS held on for the 2-1 win.

  • Bruins hope to improve

    Brett Blackmon enters his second season with the Lancaster Bruins, hoping for a brighter spring this time around.

    LHS, 7-15 last season, is hoping to find the right chemistry between returning veterans and talented newcomers.

    Blackmon, who came to LHS from Great Falls High School where he built the Red Devils into a Class A diamond power, said pitching is the key for the Bruins’ hopes this spring.

  • Lil Vols capture Top Gun AAU...

    The Lil Vols, a 10-under girls fastpitch softball travel team from Lancaster County, has won the Top Gun AAU points championship.

    The girls practice and play tournaments year round and deserve recognition for all their hard work.

    Coach Richie Ballard started the Lil Vols team three years ago and it has grown beyond the highest expectations.

  • Buford edges Silver Foxes

    Buford capped play in the Alehouse Invitational, formerly known as the Lake Murray Classic, taking a 3-2 win over Class AAAA foe Dutch Fork on Saturday.

    Dillon Hydrick, who worked 6.2 innings, was the winner, allowing two earned runs, six hits and a pair of walks. He fanned one.

    Logan Segee, in 1.1 innings of work, earned the save. He struck out one and walked one.

    Cody Gordon led Buford with three hits and drove in two runs. Brett Estridge added two hits.

    Jacob Jamison had a hit and a stolen base. Ricky Lewis and Colt Ellis each had a hit.

  • County Classic softball tourney...

    The second day of pool play in the first Lancaster County Classic Softball tournament opens today with varsity and junior varsity games at the Springdale Recreation Complex.

    Three varsity games will be held at Springdale I. The 5 p.m. game has Buford meeting Northwestern, with Lancaster meeting Central of Pageland at 6:15. Andrew Jackson faces Lancaster at Springdale I at 7:30.

    Junior varsity games at Springdale II include Northwestern vs. Lancaster at 5 p.m., followed by the AJ vs. Buford junior varsity game at 6:15 and AJ vs. Lancaster jayvee game at 7:30 p.m.
