    County high school football coaches say they will have a better assessment of their respective teams following scrimmages today.All four county teams will launch their scrimmage schedules away from home.Andrew Jackson and Buford will travel to Richburg for a four-way scrimmage with the host Lions and Ridge Spring-Monetta.Lancaster, which returned from four days of camp at Summerton’s Camp Bob Cooper, travels to Chesterfield to face the Rams and Class AAAA foe Marlboro County.Indian Land is also on the road as the Warriors will venture t

  • Meadows enjoys Sports Ambassador...

    Cameron Meadows, an A.R. Rucker Middle School student, recently returned from a 10-day People to People Sports Ambassador Program in Austria.

    In addition to competing in basketball at the Youth Friendship Games, Meadows trained with experience coaches and explored Europe with teammates from across the U.S.

  • AAA all-stars drop first game

    The Lancaster Dixie Baseball AAA all-stars had a tough time in their World Series opener, dropping a 10-0 loss to tournament host Troup County, Ga., on Monday night in LaGrange, Ga.

    Lancaster, which had a 13-game postseason win streak snapped with the shutout loss, was scheduled to face Tennessee state champion Goodlettsville, Tenn., in an elimination game on Tuesday. Goodlettsville dropped a 6-2 setback to Taxarkana, Ark., on Monday.

  • Florida downs Ponytails

    The Lancaster Dixie Softball Ponytails all-stars headed home Tuesday minus the coveted World Series title trophy, but with plenty of diamond pride.

    Florida, rebounding from an early 2-0 deficit, ralllied for an 8-4 comeback win over Lancaster at the Dixie Ponytails World Series in Pineville, La., on Monday afternoon.

    “We went 2-2 and finished in the top six,” Lancaster coach Rick Sims said. “Our goal was the World Series title, but we’re still proud of these girls.”

  • Lancers adds Williams to staff

    The University of South Carolina at Lancaster will open fall baseball practice with a special starting date and familiar face among the Lancers’ staff.

    Steve Williams, who retired as the Lancaster High School baseball coach last spring, is joining the Lancers’ staff as the team’s pitching coach.

    Williams will be on hand for the team’s first-ever fall practice which is scheduled for Aug. 11 just after midnight.

    Preparation and perspiration for the 2008 Lancaster County high school football season begins today at three of four county schools.

    Buford, Indian Land and Lancaster are scheduled to open pre-season drills today in camps around the county.

    Andrew Jackson High School, under new football coach Louis Clyburn, kicks off its preseason drills Monday.

    Teams will work on conditioning before moving into full-contact drills later in the week. The first pre-season scrimmages are scheduled for Aug. 8.

  • Ponytails stars begin series play

    The Lancaster Ponytails all-stars launch their World Series hopes Saturday when they play in the opening round of the 12-team girls softball tournament in Pineville, La.

    The Lancaster Ponytails all-stars, who captured the state championship and a bid to the World Series, meet the Tennessee champion Dyersburg/Dyer County in the opening game.

    The Lancaster Ponytails, who left Thursday for the double-elimination tournament, will participate in the opening ceremonies today.

  • Golfers double their luck

    When word spread around Sun City Carolina Lakes’ golf course that a second golfer had made a hole-in-one on the 16th hole June 7, the hole that brought the prize of a new car in a recent member/guest tournament, both hole-in-one winners considered their luck.

    “I felt like, ‘That’s just my luck, my first hole-in-one, on the hole with the car, and I didn’t even win it,’” said the second hole-in-one winner, Bob Newmarker of Hilton Head. “As it was, it all turned out great.”

    It was a good night for racing Saturday at Lancaster Motor Speedway. In the Young Guns main event, David Yandle had the car to beat. As soon as he took the green flag he went straight to the front. He had no challengers for the top spot. He dominated the entire race and cruised into victory lane taking another win. He was followed by Josh Langley, Brandon Blackmon and Leah Sweatt, who was driving for Andrew Blackwood.
