    The Palmetto Lightning earned a bid to the AAU National Tournament in Clarksville, Tenn., winning the Super Regional basketball tournament in Greenville on March 25-27.

    The Lightning took the tournament championship with a 57-16 win over the Carolina Cougars.

  • BHS Jackets jolt Braves

    The Buford Yellow Jackets, 4-2, improved to 3-1 in Region IV-AA play with a 7-2 road win over Cheraw on Friday night.

    BHS right-hander Colt Ellis went the distance, allowing two runs, five hits and three walks. He struck out five.

    Jacob Jamison paced the BHS offense with two hits, three runs batted in, two runs scored and  a stolen base.

    Ellis, Kholby Pate and Ricky Lewis each had a hit and drove in a run. Kendall Knight had a hit and scored two runs. Brett Estridge added a hit.

    The 2011 Buford High School soccer team is looking to find the right team chemistry this spring.

    The Jackets, who finished as the region runner-up last season in their final season in Class A with a 7-10 record, will look to blend veteran players with a cast of solid newcomers.

    The BHS veterans are led by senior captains Justin Sims and fullback John Knight.

    Sims and Knight reaped all-region honors last season when Knight also was named winner of the team’s Best Defensive Award.
