  • Fast finish fuels Bruins

    The fourth-ranked Lancaster Bruins finished strong to firmly hold its top spot in Region IV-AAAA basketball play.

    The Bruins, who jumped four slots in the Class AAAA state rankings, outscored the host Vikings 21-9 in the final eight minutes to cap a 78-57 win over Spring Valley on Tuesday night.

    Senior guard Xavier Holloway, one of three LHS players in double figures, hit 25 points, which included seven treys.

    Holloway netted three treys in the pivotal final period.

  • Buford pins deflate Central...

    Buford’s Zach Wright and Johntrell Caudle each posted pivotal pins to power the Jackets to a 40-30 road win over Central of Pageland on Wednesday night.

    Central held a 30-28 lead, but Wright and Caudle delivered clutch pins to lift the Jackets to the 10-point win over Eagles.

    BHS built an early 15-6 edge, but the Eagles rallied to take a pair of two-point leads, the last at 30-28, before Jackets late wins sealed the comeback victory.

  • Jackets honor fall sports...

    BUFORD The fall’s finest in Buford High School sports took center stage Tuesday night in the school’s auditorium.

    Athletes in football, volleyball and cheerleading were honored at the annual BHS fall sports awards.

    The Jackets’ football team, which went 7-5 after a 1-3 start, saluted a host of players.

    Class A all-state picks Britt Wells and Andrew “A.T.” Jennings were named Co-MVPs for the BHS team which finished as the Region III-A runner-up to eventual state champion Chesterfield.

  • Rucker, South notch county hoops...

    The Rucker Rams used a furious second-half rally to notch a 61-57 win over Buford to cap a county middle school sweep on Monday.

    In the nightcap, Rucker, down by 14 in the third period, battled back to tie the game at 52-all in the final period before pulling out the win.

    Deuce Dunlap netted 27 to pace the Rams. Ja’ Quan Winfield followed with 14. E.J. Patterson hit nine. Dre Linton and Jordan Caroway had four each. Q Johnson finished with two and Payton Brumfield hit one.

  • Warriors rally in sweep of...

    BUFORD Key adjustments helped Indian Land capture a Conference III-A basketball sweep of Buford at the BHS gym on Saturday night.

    In the opener, the IL girls were locked in a battle with the upset-minded Lady Jackets, but put together a solid second half in taking a 56-19 win.

    In the nightcap, the Warriors prevailed in a tight battle to take a 47-40 win for the sweep.

    The IL boys had to change up their strategy in taking the seven-point win.

    The Warriors, normally an up-tempo team, scaled back to a slower tempo.

  • South, Rucker register hardwood...

    The South Mustangs swept a pair of home basketball games with North Central on Thursday in the SMS gym.

    The unbeaten Lady Mustangs, 8-0, rolled to a 51-27 win as Phoebee Johnson led the way with 16 points. Aliyah Davis netted 11. Shareese Ross scored eight and Kenyatta Robertson added six. Kaliyah Jackson hit five. Kaela Robinson tallied three and Yasmine Robinson added two for the SMS girls who led 22-8 at the half.

  • Warriors top Bruins to boost mat...

    Indian Land completed county high school regular season wrestling bragging rights for the 2009-10 season in a tri-match Friday night.

    The Warriors opened the three-way meet with a 48-26 win over Lancaster.

    During the season, IL has defeated county and Conference III-A rival Buford in a pair of matches which ended tied in regulation only to see the Warriors prevail on the tie-breaker.

    IL is 3-0 against its county mat foes.

    There wasn’t much suspense Friday when the Warriors topped LHS in a 22-point win.

  • Bruins cage Bengals in OT

    The eighth-rated Lancaster Bruins have a firm handle on overtime, and now the Region IV-AAAA boys lead.

    LHS, with its fourth OT win this season in as many tries, took sole possession of the region lead with an exciting 76-74 win over Blythewood High in the packed Bruins’ Den on Friday night.

    Lancaster, 15-3 with its eighth straight win, protected what proved to be its two-point victory margin after senior guard Tracy Ingram hit a free throw with 21 seconds to play in the extra session for a 76-74 lead.

  • Jackets, Vols fall in region...

    Buford rallied to force overtime, but fell short in a Conference III-A game at McBee on Tuesday night.

    BHS, boosted by Wayne Blakeney, rallied to force OT, but the host Panthers prevailed in a 63-60 win.

    MHS’s three-point win gave the Panthers a sweep after the McBee girls rallied for a 38-34 win.

    In the boys’ game, McBee held a 32-23 lead going into the final period, but the Jackets ignited behind Blakeney, who tallied 12 points.

  • IL highlights quad meet in win...

    Indian Land moved its wrestling record to 15-8 with a 2-1 effort in a Conference III-A quad meet at Chesterfield High School on Thursday.

    The second-rated Warriors highlighted the meet with a second straight one-point win over No. 4 Buford this season.

    The match was tied at the end of regulation, but IL won on a tiebreaker, 37-36. The Warriors edged the Jackets in an early match this season, prevailing on a tiebreaker.

    Indian Land also rolled to a 54-18 win over North Central, but fell to host Chesterfield, 50-24.
