  • Lady Vols look to finish strong

    KERSHAW – The Andrew Jackson Lady Volunteers, at the midpoint of their 2012 soccer schedule, are 3-4, but there’s plenty of hope for the AJ booters this spring.
    The Lady Vols capped pre-spring break play with a pair of solid wins to provide them a boost for the rest of the season.
    AJ downed county rival and Region IV-AA foe Indian Land High 4-2.
    The Lady Vols, unranked at that time, knocked off the third-rated Lady Warriors.

    It’s April 8, which this year, is Easter. April 8, without being Easter, is still a special date for me.
    In baseball lore, you might recall that’s the date Hank Aaron hit his historic home run in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium to pass Babe Ruth.
    A few seasons before the old Braves’ stadium closed, our church, First Presbyterian, took a bus trip to see the Braves play the Phillies.
    Do you remember the old outfield sign in left center field where Aaron’s 715th home run sailed out of the park and into history?

    CHERAW – The Andrew Jackson Volunteers captured third place in the Founders Federal Credit Union Diamond Challenge with a 4-3 win over Great Falls on Tuesday afternoon in Cheraw.

    The Vols, coming off a 9-6 extra-inning loss to Latta, rebounded for the one-run win behind sophomore hurler Dustin Eddins.

  • IL girls soccer making strides...

    Graduation took a toll on the Indian Land Lady Warriors’ soccer team, but IL coach Mark Bonda said the Lady Warriors are making progress this spring.

    “Going into this season we knew we would be a young team,” Bonda said. “We graduated eight seniors  which left a lot of key positions open.”

    The Larry Davis “Senior Showcase” will be held Saturday afternoon at Lewisville High School.

    The event is a basketball game featuring area senior talent in an all-star contest at 2 p.m.

    Lancaster High School second-year softball coach Kim Perry said she feels her Lady Bruins blossomed in the annual Azalea Invitational Tournament in Summerville this week.

    Lancaster area junior golfer Anthony Sutton had an impressive weekend on the links at the Jekyll Island Cup, an invitation-only tournament held by U.S. Kids Golf on the Georgia coast.

    Easter weekend at Lancaster Motor Speedway promises to be hopping with plenty of racing action at the half-mile dirt oval.

    The Carolina Crown, which was originally set for March 17-18 when it was rained out, is set for this weekend.
