  • Teams focus on jamborees

    Lancaster High School head coach Bobby Collins said the Bruins will have a good idea about their football team after playing in two jamborees this weekend.
    Lancaster faces Olympic at 8:15 tonight in the Chester County Jamboree at Chester High School.
    The Bruins will then battle Ardrey Kell High School in the annual North-South Kickoff Classic at Indian Land High School on Saturday.
    LHS is slated to face the AKHS Knights at 8 p.m. at IL’s Reservation.

  • Sutton to defend LGC championship

    Anthony “T” Sutton will defend his title this weekend in the annual Lancaster Golf Club championship at the LGC.
    Sutton, a Buford High School golf star, heads a strong field in contention for the LGC’s top honor.
    A year ago, Sutton shot a 150 (72-78) to capture a six-shot win over Buford High School golf teammate Garrett Crenshaw, (81-75). Crenshaw was tied with Bruce Gantt at the end of regulation, but carded a par on the first playoff hole to finish as the runner-up to Sutton.

    Lancaster Super Speedway roars back to action Saturday night with a major streak on the line.
    The Cauthen Motors Renegade Division features an interesting situation.
    Andrew Baker has been dominating the competition lately, reeling off four straight wins.
    Lancaster Super Speedway owner Doug McManus has put up a $150 bounty to any driver who can outrun Andrew Baker.

  • Scrimmage reviews mixed

    The reviews were mixed following Saturday scrimmages for a pair of county high school football teams.
    Andrew Jackson second-year head coach C.J. Frye said the Volunteers competed well in their road scrimmage with Class A foe Great Falls High School on Saturday.
    “Overall, we were well pleased,” Frye said. “The effort was there for our team.”
    He noted AJ junior quarterback Tad McCowan threw and ran the football well.
    Frye said Bailey Johnson had a 40-yard touchdown catch from McCowan.

    Lancaster Super Speedway had an amazing car count Saturday night, with another strong night of racing.
    In Lancaster Super Speedway’s newly acquired division, the Pure Stock V8 Division debuted, with the front row of Bill Stutler and Jerry Knight.

    Lancaster County high school football coaches will have a better idea about their respective teams as the squads near their first scrimmage sessions this weekend.
    Buford, under third-year head coach Tripp Watts, will get the jump on its country gridiron brethren with a scrimmage at McBee today.
    The Jackets, coming off a 6-5 season, will battle the host MHS Panthers and Hannah-Pamplico in a three-way session today at the Panthers’ field where play begins at 6 p.m.

  • Former USC lineman boost team

    It was all on the line Monday night at the Lancaster Moose Lodge.
    The Lancaster County Gamecock Club held its annual kickoff cookout and the guys known for the bulk and beef held the line.
    Former Gamecocks linemen Langston Moore, Travelle Wharton and Fran Person each took a little time to address the gathering of Gamecocks.
    Moore, the sideline reporter for the Gamecock Radio Network, handled most of the mic time.

    Veteran Andrew Jackson High School football fans can easily recall if the Volunteers had a landmark gridiron effort, they could quickly flip to the back of the AJ football program to see if the mark had been shattered.
    If not, they could see how close the AJ athlete came, or possibly how much he topped an old Vols’ milestone.
    I’ve often referenced the information, a reliable tool for any sports reporter following up on a major play in a big game.

  • LSS slates Pure Stock V8 debut,...

    Lancaster Super Speedway will be providing plenty of racing action to the fans and drivers Saturday night.
    Debuting this Saturday is the Pure Stock V8 Division, and fans and drivers have wanted this division at LSS for a while now.
    The Pure Stock V8 Division provides some of the best racing at area tracks on Friday and Saturday nights.
    Drivers such as Wally Cook, Jerry Knight, Eric Cochran and many more are expected to be here to give the LSS half-mile dirt track a test Saturday night.

  • Sutton nets LJGA honor

    Anthony “T” Sutton has added another honor to his golf resume.
    Sutton, the defending Lancaster Golf Club champion and an all-state golfer at Buford High School, can now claim the title of the Matt Blackwell Award as the Lancaster Junior Golf Association Golfer of the Year for the 2016 season.
    Sutton wrapped up his title with his win in the Roy Small Junior Championship at the Lancaster Golf Club last week.
