  • Jordan Sellers to play at PIU

    Piedmont International University is adding baseball to its sports program and Buford High School baseball player Jordan Sellers will be part of the Bruins’ diamond fold.
    Sellers, who played outfield last spring for the Jackets, but is expected to work at second base this season, signed with Piedmont International at BHS on Thursday.
    Sellers, who returned to high school baseball last season, is hoping to make the most of the chance to play at the next level.

  • Gamecocks, Lancers team up for...

    The Gamecocks and Lancers had something to crow about late Thursday afternoon.
    The University of South Carolina and University of South Carolina Lancaster backers captured annual bragging rights in the 16th annual Big Thursday Scholarship golf tournament at the Lancaster Golf Club.
    The Gamecocks and Lancers team prevailed 6-4 in the 10 matches with the rival Clemson teams.

  • Blue Devils delivered 1967 Class...

    HEATH SPRINGS – For The 1967 Heath Springs Blue Devils, the third time was the charm – a long-sought state championship football trophy was finally theirs.
    Heath Springs, denied the two previous seasons for the Class C state title, struck gridiron gold with the 1967 state championship.
    The golden anniversary of the Blue Devils’ blue ribbon season, a 10-2 finish with a 14-6 win over Lower State champion St. Stephen, was celebrated Saturday night at Heath Springs Baptist Church fellowship hall.

  • Cherokee Speedway hosts second...

    Leg two of the Mike Duvall Memorial Blue Gray 100 continues today.
    Gaffney’s Cherokee Speedway will host day two of one of the Carolinas biggest dirt track races.
    The Blue Gray 100 is now known as the Mike Duvall Memorial Blue Gray 100, held in memory of Duvall, who died earlier this year.
    Duvall is regarded as a household name in dirt track racing across the country. Duvall’s car was known as the Flinstone Flyer.
    Fans, in Duvall’s heyday, said when he came to a track, the drivers were racing for second.

  • Buford cheer team in state field

    The Buford High School cheer squad, a fixture in state finals competition, is going for the gold again Saturday in the Colonial Life Arena at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

    The Jackets, led by veteran cheer coach Julie Thompson, are bidding for a fourth straight top five finish in the state field.

    BHS placed fifth in the Class AAA state competition last fall after consecutive top four finishes in the Class AA state competition the previous two seasons. Class AAA includes Class AA and A schools in a combined field.

  • Clippers’ Thornwell to face...

    Former Lancaster High School basketball star Sindarius Thornwell will return to his hoops roots Saturday when the Los Angeles Clippers face the Charlotte Hornets in Charlotte at the Spectrum Center.

    Thornwell, a second round pick in the NBA June draft, is in his rookie season  with the Clippers, who are 5-8 heading into a road clash with the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight.

    Thornwell, who broke into the Clippers starting lineup last week, is averaging 4.8 points a game and 1.2 rebounds.

  • James commits to Musketeers

    For Dontarius James, it’s Volunteer to Musketeer.

    James, the former Andrew Jackson High School basketball star, has given Xavier University in Cincinnati, a verbal commitment to play with the Musketeers, according to Huntington Prep (W.Va.) coach Jeremy Grubbs.

    James, according to Grubbs, made his oral pledge to Xavier University following a weekend visit to the Big East member.

  • Catoe, Sistare in tie at the top

    As the 2017 football season winds to its final weeks, those gallant girls of gridiron forecasts are in a deadlock – alive and picking and in a dead heat.

    It’s been close all season and now they’re even.

    Mandy Catoe and Lori Sistare “Bright,” a game apart last week, are tied at the top.

    Sistare, in the mix for top honors since joining the Pigskin Picks, posted a 14-6 effort to Catoe’s 13-7 showing last week.

    When all was said and done, the girls are deadlocked at 187-72.

  • Cherokee Speedway to Host Mike...

    Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney will host one of the Carolinas biggest races in dirt track action this weekend.

    The Blue Gray 100 is now being called the Mike Duvall Memorial Blue Gray 100.

    Duvall, regarded as one of the most famous drivers in dirt track racing, lost his battle with an illness earlier this year.

    Duvall made his car, the Flinstone Flyer, famous across the nation.

    Racing fans used to say when Duvall pulled onto a race track, drivers knew they were racing for second.
