  • BHS Jackets upbeat about hoops hopes

    There’s a feeling of hoops optimism in the Buford High School basketball program for the 2011-12 season.

    The BHS boys, who earned a Class AA Upper State postseason bid last winter, return a solid nucleus from last season.

    The Lady Jackets sport a veteran team and are hopeful on improving their record and earning a playoff bid.

    Coach Neil Couch’s second BHS boys team is led by senior post player Marcus Brown, an all-region pick who averaged 12.2 points and 7.2 rebounds last season.

    The Lancaster County high school basketball season opens with plenty of hoopla Saturday at Buford High School.

    The fourth annual Jackets Preseason Invitational, which feaures all four county schools at the BHS, tips off Saturday afternoon.

  • County football players earn Tri-County honors

    Three county athletes were recognized for their play in week 11 at the weekly meeting of the Tri-County Football Coaches Association on Tuesday.
    Indian Land senior running back Trey Eaves  along with Andrew Jackson’s William Cunningham and Tyler Denkins were saluted for their solid play.
    Eaves earned the Division II offensive player of the week after rushing for 51 yards in 12 carries in IL’s 21-0 playoff  loss to Liberty.

  • Buford cheer squad earns bid to AA field

    The Buford High School athletic schedule is between seasons, but there’s plenty for Jackets’ fans to cheer about.
    The Buford varsity cheerleaders, a young squad which sports only three seniors, is headed to the Class AA state cheer competition Saturday.
    The Jackets’ cheer squad, a 29-member group led by 18-year veteran coach Julie Thompson, qualified for the 12-team state field on Wednesday at the Upper State competition at Dorman High School in Spartanburg.

    Alexandria McCain’s scholarship signing to play golf at Converse College was a historic athletic moment Thursday afternoon in the Lancaster High School conference room.
    McCain, a member of the LHS Lady Bruins’ golf team out of Indian Land High School, became the first LHS girls golf signee since the program was started to field a full team four years ago.
    McCain also became the first signee for the Converse program which is staring a program.

  • Gators halt Bruins’ hopes

    GOOSE CREEK – The Goose Creek Gators, with a powerful rushing attack, snapped the Lancaster Bruins’ playoff hopes with a 49-12 win on Friday night at GCHS’s John Fulmer Field.
    The Gators, 11-1, racked up 402 rushing yards and broke from a 7-6 lead with 42 straight points en route to the Class AAAA Division II first-round playoff win.
    The 37-point win advances No. 3 Goose Creek, the top seed in the Class AAAA Division II Upper Bracket, to face Northwestern.
