  • Lady Bruins second in region cross country

    The Lancaster High School girls cross country team finished second in the region meet held last week at Northwestern High School in Rock Hill.

    JeNae Jones finished eighth overall to make the all-region team for the second year in a row.

    ROCK HILL – Lancaster High’s gut-check drive gave the Bruins plenty of reasons to hold their heads high with a major Class AAAA football victory Thursday night.

    Bruins’ senior quarterback Shaq Williams capped what LHS coach Bennie McMurray called a “gut-check drive” with a yard plunge to lift LHS to a thrilling 23-21 win over No. 7 Northwestern at Rock Hill’s District Three Stadium.

  • Stallions’ late TD foils Jackets’ hopes

    BUFORD – A late Stallions’ charge zapped hopes of a happy Buford High School homecoming Friday night at BHS’s Jackets Stadium.

    The Lee Central Stallions, putting a damper on the Jackets’ hopes early on with a 14-0 lead, used Jamari Wright’s two-yard touchdown run with 12.2 seconds left to cap a 29-22 Conference IV-AA football win.

    The Stallions, 4-4, 1-2, notched their first-ever win over the Jackets, driving 61 yards in 11 plays to tally the decisive touchdown.

    PAGELAND – The high-flying Central Eagles soared from the start on their way to a 40-0 Conference IV-AA home football win over Indian Land on Friday night.

    The Eagles, 6-2, 3-0, struck in a hurry in building a 20-0 lead midway the first half.

    Central owned a 26-0 lead at the end of the first period.

    CHERAW – Cheraw rolled up 407 yards total offense in defeating Andrew Jackson 48-7 on CHS’s homecoming on Friday night.

    The Braves turned two AJ turnovers into touchdowns in the first half en route to a 41-0 halftime lead.

    “We certainly did not help ourselves with the number of mistakes we made tonight,” said AJ coach David Moore. “Cheraw is good enough without us helping them with turnovers.

    Three Lancaster County prep football players reaped honors for their banner play at the weekly meeting of the Founders Federal Tri-County Football Coaches Association meeting on Tuesday.

    Spartanburg, led by Katy Funk’s 69, captured the Region III-AAAA golf tournament at the Lancaster Golf Club on Monday.

    The SHS Lady Vikings, as a team, shot 317 to top the five-team field.
