  • Vols facing tough foe

    Andrew Jackson High second-year head coach C.J. Frye said the Volunteers will need a top effort to keep their season alive Friday night when they face Saluda in Class AA Upper State second-round football playoffs.
    AJ, 8-2, earned its shot at the 10-1 Saluda Tigers with a 42-21 win over Ninety Six on Friday night at home.
    AJ trailed 21-20 at the half, but roared back for the 21-point victory to keep its Class AA state title hopes alive.

  • AJ’s Sowell, IL’s Pressley ranked among state’s top senior players

    Two Lancaster County senior girls hoops stars and a county team are among the hardwood elite with the S.C. Basketball Coaches Association preseason state rankings recently released.

    Andrew Jackson High School senior center Alexxus Sowell along with Indian Land senior Nia Pressley were honored among the top five senior players in their respective classifications.

    Sowell, with a stellar junior season, is rated among the top five senior girls in Class AA play.

  • AJ’s Poston takes pride in play

    KERSHAW – The 2016 Andrew Jackson Volunteers, at 8-2 on the season, are regarded as one of the state’s most improved football teams this season.

    AJ senior offensive lineman Joseph Poston is elated with the Vols’ season, a marked improvement over last fall’s 3-7 record and no playoffs, but he’s not surprised.

  • Ricks commits to S.C. State

    Lancaster High School senior linebacker Desmond Ricks has given S.C. State University a commitment to sign with the Bulldogs.
    The NCAA national signing day for football is Feb. 1, 2017. Verbal pledges are non-binding to the school.
    Ricks, a three-year member of the LHS varsity, was a two-year starter for the Bruins.
    Ricks, for the Bruins’ 5-6 season under third-year head coach Bobby Collins, notched 88 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles, two blocked passes, a fumble recovery and blocked extra point.

  • Bruins go 3-0, win BHS preseason hoops tourney

    The Lancaster Bruins completed a stellar run to the championship in the annual Buford High Preseason basketball tournament with a 62-46 win over Fairfield Central High on Monday night.
    LHS senior Nehemiah McGriff, the recent Limestone College signee, paced the Bruins with 26, 18 in the first half.
    Lancaster, which went 3-0 in the three-day tourney, built a 40-19 lead at the break and cruised to the 16-point win over the Griffins.
    LHS held a 51-31 edge after three periods.
    McGriff, in three tourney games, had 75 points to lead the LHS cause.

    KERSHAW – The Andrew Jackson Volunteers are marching on after opening the Class AA Upper State football playoffs with a solid 42-21 home win over Ninety Six on Friday night.

    AJ, which trailed 21-20 at the half, ignited in the second half to advance to face Saluda at SHS in second-round play Friday night.

  • Bears edge Bruins, 37-31

    BELTON – In a beast mode clash, the Belton Honea Path Bears were able to claw out a thrilling 37-31 triple overtime win over the Lancaster Bruins to open the Class AAAA Upper State football playoffs at BHP on Friday night.

    The back-and-forth contest came down to well-executed Kameron Burton four-yard quarterback keeper to give the 10-1 Bears the 37-31 win over the Bruins.

  • Bears roar on Jackets’ turnovers

    HEMINGWAY – Buford started the postseason on the road at Carver’s Bay in Hemmingway, but the Jackets never got started on the field. 

    Carvers Bay running back Levi White scored five touchdowns for the Bears en route to the 50-19 first-round win.

  • LHS Bruins trio earns Tri-County Coaches honors

    FORT MILL – Three Lancaster High School football standouts were honored at the weekly meeting of the Tri-County Football Coaches Association on Wednesday.
    Bruins’ stars Markees Watts, C.D. Catoe and Kevius Barnes were honored for their play in LHS’s 28-26 playoff-clinching win over Richland Northeast on Nov. 3.
    Watts reaped the Class AAAA-AAAAA Defensive Lineman of the Week with eight tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks and two batted down passes.
