  • Moyer receives fitting farewell

    Jeff Moyer, the late Buford High School coach and teacher who died from brain cancer earlier this month, was better known as “Coach Mo.”
    “Coach Mo,” often related to colleagues, students and players, he was known as “The Legend.”
    Fittingly so, “Coach Mo” was remembered as a BHS legend, one who could generate laughter, reverence and motivation, during a memorial service in the BHS gym on Sunday afternoon.

  • Jackets rally to edge Warriors

    Host Buford won a hard-fought soccer match, taking a 2-1 win over Indian Land on Thursday night.
    In the first half, both teams battled, creating opportunities, but the defenses held strong and the first half was scoreless.
    Indian Land took a 1-0 lead as the Warriors’ senior Joe Tombs brushed the ball to the right from out on the left wing, and took a great shot, to put the Warriors up, 1-0.
    Buford battled to answer the goal.
    The answer came in the 68th minute when Indian Land was whistled for a hand ball just outside the 18-yard box.

  • Lady Bruins’ Woods shines as North MVP

    Lancaster High School girls senior basketball player Zaria Woods put quite a capper on her prep hoops career.
    Woods, playing in the annual North-South girls all-star basketball game, didn’t close with a win, but she had something to savor from the elite contest, her final high school game, at Lexington High School on Saturday afternoon.
    Woods, with 14 points and 12 rebounds, was named the North stars MVP in the game, a 72-64 South win.

  • Vols top Cheraw golfers

    The Andrew Jackson High School golf team evened its record at 1-1 on the season with a Region IV-AA win over Cheraw High School on Thursday.

    The Vols shot a 195 to a 254 for the CHS Braves.

    Mason Sowell shot a 35 to lead AJ. Luke Benfield carded a 49. Tad McCowan had a 55 and Parker Deese carded a 56.

    Brian Greene had a 56 and Amelia Ryne had a 69.

    “We showed improvement from our fist match,” AJ coach Heath Brewer said.

    Central topped the AJ golfers, 205-208 on Tuesday at the Kershaw Country Club.

  • Stingers end up 4th in state field

    The Buford Stingers Wrestling Club (BSWC) competed in the S.C. Youth Wrestling Association state championships March 10 at Lexington High School in Lexington.

    The BSWC took seven wrestlers to compete in the tournament, which featured 390 individual wrestlers and 55 teams from across the state.

    The BSWC had four wrestlers place in their brackets.

    Maddox Hunter posted a record of 3-1, placing second in the 8U 52-pound division.

  • AJ softball looks to returnees, newcomers

    KERSHAW – The 2018 Andrew Jackson High School softball team has some key cleats to fill for the new season.

    AJ, the Class AA Upper State runner-up to Buford, went 20-11 last season under first-year coach Wesley Kidd.

    The AJ girls, the region runner-up, earned a bid to the Class AA Upstate championship round after winning the Class AA District III title.

    The Lady Vols lost six seniors off the team, which also lost its pitching staff.

  • Rays shining in winter meets

    The Gregory YMCA Rays swim team has produced a banner effort in winter competition at two USA state meets this season.

    The Rays team, coached by Anne Small, trains at the Gregory Family YMCA pool at USC Lancaster.

    The Rays 10-over swimmers competed at the Westside Aquatics Center in Greenville on Feb. 16-19.

    The Rays 8-under swimmers competed at the Westside Aquatics Center in Greenville March 10-11.

    8-under state results

    Brooke Carter – Top 10 in 3 of 6 individual events, 6. 25 breast; 8. 25 back; 10. 50 breast.

  • Vols down top-rated Lions

    KERSHAW – The Andrew Jackson Volunteers baseball team rallied for a 4-3 win over Lewisville High School at the Andrew Jackson High School baseball field on Thursday night.

    Lewisville, ranked No. 1 in the latest Class A state baseball poll, recently captured the Comporium Preseason Invitational, which opened play at AJ and closed play in Buford Park at Buford High School.

    The Vols ignited for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the one-run win over the Lions on Thursday night.

  • Carley Sims’ blast lifts AJ

    The Andrew Jackson Lady Volunteers used a clutch long ball to take an 8-7 softball win over county rival Lancaster High School at the LHS field on Thursday night.

    AJ, coming off a Region IV-AA loss to Cheraw, trailed 4-1 after three innings, but the Lady Vols rallied to take a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning.

    Lancaster, unbeaten on the season coming into the game, rallied to tie the game at 6-all.

    In the top of the seventh, the visiting Lady Vols struck for two runs which gave them the win.

  • County trio on North team

    Lancaster County will have its share of stars among the state basketball elite at the annual North-South All-Star girls game this weekend.

    Two county hardwood aces and a coach will represent the county on the North squad.

    The trio includes Lancaster High School senior Zaria Woods, Buford High School senior Payton Howell and Lady Jackets coach T.J. Armbrust.

    “This is a great honor to be recognized by your peers,” Armbrust said. “I was thrilled when I was notified of my selection as an all-star coach.
