  • Jackets deck Rams in consolation game

    The Buford boys, with a strong finish, downed Region IV-AA foe Chesterfield to capture consolation honors in the Anson County Invitational holiday basketball tournament at Anson County (N.C.) High School on Dec. 22.
    The Jackets, who split in the two-day tournament, had a solid fourth quarter to seal the 65-56 win over the Rams. Buford, on top 45-41 after three periods, ignited on a pivotal 20-15 run to take the nine-point victory.

  • Defense has state, regional honorees

    Ace defensive players who earned state and regional football honors this season lead The Lancaster News’ 2015 all-county defense.
    Buford High School senior defensive back Christian Catledge and Lancaster High School sophomore defensive end Markees Watts pace the  stop unit.
    Catledge, a North-South All-Star game pick, leads the secondary with 193 tackling points on 56 first hits, 58 assists, seven interceptions, three pass break-ups, and a blocked kick.

  • Offense sports big-play performers

    The Lancaster News 2015 all-county offense sports its share of big-play performers, including an 1,000-yard rusher and a pair of ace runners who were just shy of the 1,000-yard mark for the season.
    Andrew Jackson High School’s Heath Gandy topped the 1,000-yard rushing mark with 1,014 yards and 15 touchdowns to go with 20 catches for 422 yards and three touchdowns.
    The versatile all-region pick, Gandy also completed nine of 19 passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.

  • TLN honors Bruins' duo

    The Lancaster Bruins’ 2015 football season didn’t last as long as second-year LHS coach Bobby Collins hoped, but it was a step in the right direction.
    The Bruins, coming off an 8-4 mark in Collins’ first season at LHS, again posted eight wins and a runner-up finish in Region III-AAA.
    LHS, 8-3, once again was the runner-up to South Pointe High School of Rock Hill, which won the Class AAA state championship for the third time in five seasons.

  • Anson County rallies, tops BHS

    Host Anson County High School (N.C.) roared in the final period to post a 70-56 win over Buford High School in the Anson County Invitational basketball tournament Dec. 21.
    Anson County held a narrow 52-50 lead after three periods and then ignited in the final quarter on an 18-6 surge to take the 14-point win.

  • Jackets capture three titles in Palmetto Slam

    A trio of Buford High School wrestlers led the Jackets’ mat effort in the Palmetto Slam at Lugoff-Elgin High School in Kershaw County on Dec. 18-19.
    The BHS threesome of Scotti Moser, Nick Jones and Dakota Barton each posted a weight division title to lead the Jackets to a seventh overall finish in the 21-team field.
    Moser, unbeaten on the season, won the 170-pound division with three pins and a decision of Antwan Frazier of North Charleston in the championship round.

  • Vols post second mat victory over Bruins

    Andrew Jackson completed a season’s wrestling sweep of Class AAA county rival Lancaster High School, taking a 54-27 win over the Bruins on Dec. 15 in the Volunteers’ gym.
    AJ posted six pins in the 27-point victory over the Bruins on Dec. 15 at AJ.
    The Vols, 7-3 on the season, defeated Lancaster 60-18 at the Bruins’ gym on Dec. 3.
    Andrew Jackson used eight pins to post the win over Lancaster High at the LHS gym on Dec. 3. The Volunteers opened a 36-6 lead and cruised to the 42-point win.

  • Warriors split games in Challenge

    Cardinal Newman rallied in the second half to take a 59-49 win over Indian Land in the second round of the Chick-fil-A Carolina Challenge at Richland Northeast High School on Dec. 21.
    The Warriors opened play in the holiday tournament, taking a 54-53 win over Heathwood Hall of Columbia at RNE on Dec. 19.
    The Cardinals’ 10-point win snapped IL’s three-game win streak to leave the Warriors at 3-6 on the season.
    ILHS held a 28-25 halftime lead, but the Cardinals charged back in the second half for the comeback win.

  • Bearcats rally, top Bruins

    Lancaster capped play in the Y.C. Winborn Memorial basketball tournament with a tough loss to Class AAAA foe Rock Hill High School on Dec. 21.
    The Bruins opened strong, but couldn’t maintain their edge in dropping a 49-44 loss to the Bearcats, who defeated LHS for the third time this season.
    Rock Hill downed Lancaster 42-35 at home Dec. 1 and the Bearcats edged LHS, 39-37 on  Dec. 8 in the Bruins’ gym.

  • Jackets wrestlers earn mat sweep

    The Buford High School wrestling team improved to 8-3 on the season with a sweep of Ware Shoals and Whitmire at the WHS gym on Dec. 17.
    The Jackets downed Ware Shoals, 66-18 and Whitmire, 57-21.
    Buford was paced by Scotti Moser, Chase Taylor, Matthew Wallace and Malik Clyburn who each had two pins in the Jackets’ road sweep of the Hornets and Wolverines.
