  • Wells a winner at Buford High

    Tripp Watts, the interim Buford High School head football coach, has some big shoes to fill.

    Watts, from now to the end of the 2014 BHS football season, will learn a great deal, but he knows now following coach Mike Wells is no easy task.

    Watts, tabbed as the Jackets’ interim head coach after Wells announced April 10 he was yielding his coaching duties to become the school’s full-time athletics director, is doing more than replacing a big guy.

    KERSHAW – The Andrew Jackson High golfers drove to their 14th straight victory of the season Thursday evening, April 10 as Andrew Jackson defeated Great Falls and Cheraw.

    The Vols shot a 167, while Cheraw carded a 187 and Great Falls had a 214.

  • Lady Bruins go 3-1 in Cheraw tourney

     The Lancaster Lady Bruins went 3-1 in the annual Cheraw Spring Swing prep softball tournament on Monday, April 14 in Cheraw.

    The tournament was scheduled to be played over two days, but with rain in the forecast for Tuesday, April 15, the tourney format was altered to have a one-day tournament.

  • Jackets win tourney finale


    Buford High capped play in the Sandlapper Invitational, taking a 5-2 comeback win over Edisto High at Pelion High School on Wednesday, April 16.

    The Jackets, down 2-1 in the seventh inning, rallied for four runs on the way to the three-run victory over the Cougars.

  • AJ, BHS split in tourney


    Buford and Andrew Jackson split games in their first two days of play in the Sandlapper Invitational prep baseball tournament.

    The Jackets rallied for an 11-10 win over Brookland-Cayce of Columbia in first-round play Saturday, April 12, but then dropped a 9-1 loss to Pelion at Pelion High School on Monday, April 14.

  • Warriors’ Rogers, Smith head county boys awards

    The Indian Land Warriors were the toast of the Lancaster County prep basketball hardwood for the 2013-14 season.

    The Warriors, who finished 20-5 and the Class AA Upper State runners-up, won the Region IV-AA championship with an unbeaten record for the second straight season.

    Two ace senior guards and a veteran coach who guided his team to a state title berth highlight The Lancaster News’ all-county honors for the 2013-14 girls basketball season.

    Andrew Jackson High School senior guard Dareisha Sowell and Lancaster High School senior guard Kyia Hough shared the County Player of the Year for girls basketball.

  • Bruins rally to earn first win


    The Lancaster Bruins rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to post their first win of the 2014 prep baseball season with a 9-6 Region IV-AAAA victory over York at Doomsday Corner on Friday, April 11.

    The Andrew Jackson High School golf team captured its 14th straight win Thursday, April 10 when the Volunteers downed Class A foe Great Falls and Region IV-AA opponent Cheraw at Kershaw Golf Club.

    The Vols, 14-0, 7-0 in region play, shot a 167, while Cheraw carded a 187 and Great Falls had a 214.
