  • Bishops rally, top Warriors for Class AA soccer crown

    IRMO – The Class AA state title match was a tale of two halves, with the final 40 minutes a disappointing yet familiar storyline for five-time Upper State champion Indian Land High School Warriors.
    The game Warriors battled hard, as they did in their previous four Class AA state title appearances, but came up short in a 4-1 loss to Class AA Lower State champion Bishop England.
    The first half, with the determined Warriors blunting the Bishops’ offensive threats, was a scoreless draw at Irmo High School’s W.C. Hawkins Stadium on Friday night.

  • BHS closing in on crown

    DILLON – Buford High School softball is a win away from Lady Jackets’ diamond heyday.
    Class AA Upper State champion Buford, 23-4, launched its quest for a state championship, taking a 3-0 win over Lower State champion Dillon on Monday at the DHS softball field.
    BHS, unbeaten in the playoffs with seven straight shutouts, closed in on the coveted state title with the three-run win over the Lady Wildcats, who fell to 21-7.

  • Buford faces Dillon for Class AA state softball crown

    The Dillon Lady Wildcats clawed back to win the Class AA Lower State softball championship with an exciting 4-3 win over Johnsonville on Saturday at the DHS field.

    Dillon, 21-5, advances to face Class AA Upper State champion Buford for the state softball crown in a best-of-three series.

    Game one in the series is at Dillon on Monday at 6:30 p.m., with game two set for Wednesday at BHS. Game three, if needed, will be played at a neutral site Friday.

  • Johnson signs to play for Wolves

    Newberry College picked up a big signee on May 6 when Lancaster High School star football player Lewis Johnson signed with the Wolves.
    Johnson, a 6-3, 230-pounder, made his decision official in the LHS conference room, signing with the South Atlantic Conference member.
    “I like the school and I feel I will fit in well there,” he said. “I’m glad I have the opportunity to go there and play.”
    Johnson, a two-sport performer for the Bruins, played football and basketball.

  • Bruins golfers 5th in Upstate, net state bid

    The Lancaster Bruins, paced by junior links standout Brady Hinkle, are headed to the Class AAA state golf tournament.
    The Bruins, the back-to-back Region III-AAA champions, placed fifth in the Class AAA Upper State tournament at Seneca’s Cross Creek Plantation on Monday. The Bruins, led by Hinkle’s 72, shot a 328 as a team.
    Hinkle was second overall, while Chapman’s Jacob Bridgeman was the Class AAA Upstate medalist with a 67.

  • Warriors Upstate champs

    INDIAN LAND – Indian Land High’s comeback soccer ways have the Warriors going for the Class AA state title for the fifth consecutive season.
    The Warriors, who rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit against scrappy Powdersville, charged back for two second-half goals to win the Class AA Upper State soccer crown for the fifth straight season at IL’s Reservation on Tuesday night.
    The Warriors, 17-5, face Lower State champion Bishop England, 22-2, for the Class AA state soccer title tonight at 7 at Irmo High School’s W.C. Hawkins Stadium.

  • Buford hosts Crescent on Thursday

    Buford will be at home Thursday, seeking to wrap up the Class AA Upper State softball title and a bid to the Class AA state title series.

    The Lady Jackets, unbeaten in the Class AA Upstate playoffs with five straight shutouts, host Crescent on Thursday at 5 p.m. A BHS win over the CHS Lady Tigers will give Buford the Upstate title and a bid to the state title round. A loss will force a second game to follow the first game at Buford.

  • LHS Lady Bruins host Daniel on Thursday

    The Lancaster Lady Bruins will host Daniel High of Clemson on Thursday at 6 p.m. in an elimination game

    in the Class AAA Upstate softball playoffs.

    Lancaster, which fell to Chapin on Monday, was scheduled to host Daniel on Wednesday, but the game was rained out and reset for Thursday night at the LHS softball field.
    The winner of the Lancaster vs. Daniel game will venture to Union County on Friday for an elimination game in the Class AAA Upstate playoffs.

  • County track trio tops in AA Upstate meet

    A trio of county athletes posted Class AA Upper State track crowns at the meet at Keenan High School in Columbia.
    Buford had two athletes to capture Upstate crowns, with senior Autumn Rabon winning the high jump with a 5-2 effort.
    Jackets’ 100-meter wheel chair athlete John Elliott, in his first season of competition, topped the Upstate field with a personal-best 31.02 effort.
    Andrew Jackson also had a first with the AJ girls winning the 4 x 400-meter run in 4:11.16.

  • IL Warriors rally to earn AA Upstate title shot

    Indian Land had a fine finish to fuel its state soccer playoff hopes with a 6-3 comeback win over Mid-Carolina High School of Prosperity on Saturday at IL’s Reservation.
    The match, tied 2-2 at the break, saw the Warriors pick up the pace in the second half on the way to the three-goal win.
    The Rebels actually took a 3-2 lead on a Miguel Gonzales goal, but the fast-finishing Warriors rallied for the win.
    Henry Suvillaga tied the match at 3-all to ignite the Warriors’ late charge.
