  • Returnees key for BHS baseball

    The return of 10 players, including three starters, gives Buford High School baseball coach Eric Funderburk plenty of hope for the 2012 Jackets’ season.
    BHS, 16-6 and the Region IV-AA champion last spring, has a solid group of players back from the team including junior catcher Tripp Wright along with outfielders Jay Chambers  and Kholby Pate, who will also be counted on to pitch.
    Wright, a two-year starter, will handle the BHS hurlers at catcher. Evan “Buck Shot” Flynn, a freshman, will also work at catcher.

  • LHS, Buford post baseball jamboree wins

    Lancaster and Buford posted wins in the fourth annual Gameday at Doomsday baseball jamboree at the Lancaster High baseball field on Saturday.
    Lancaster topped Lewisville, 12-1 and Buford downed Andrew Jackson, 6-1.
    Scottie Moser, Tripp Wright Kendrick Trapps each had a hit and drove in a run for the Jackets. Tripp Rollings, Sidney Watson and Seth Graves had one hit apiece for AJ.
    In the Bruins’ win, Doopy Cloud and Khoury Phillips each homered for the Bruins.

  • Dorman foils Bruins' postseason hopes

    Dorman took an early lead and never lost its  edge in taking an 81-62 win over No. 6 Lancaster in the Class AAAA Upper State semifinals on Tuesday night at Dorman High.

    The 25-3 Cavaliers held off several Lancaster runs in an attempt to take the lead, but Dorman kept the upper hand for the 19-point win.

    The Cavs' win sends DHS to the Class AAAA Upper State title game to face Gaffney on Friday night at 8:30 at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville.

  • Returnees give solid hope for LHS baseball

    The Lancaster Bruins’ baseball team, with eight returnees, is optimistic about the 2012 LHS season.
    The Bruins, led by fourth-year head coach Brett Blackmon, have a solid cast back from the 2011 squad which went 11-12 and earned a Class AAAA Upper State playoff berth.
    The team also has some solid players up from the jayvee team who are expected to contribute.

  • SCBCA honors Thornwell

    Prior to the start of the 2011-12 high school basketball season, Lancaster High School junior star Sindarius Thornwell was named in the Elite 5 boys players by the S.C. Basketball Coaches Association.
    Thornwell, a 6-5 guard-forward, proved to be that and more as he was recently named the Class AAAA boys Player of the Year by the SCBCA.

  • Lady Vols’ rally falls short in playoffs

    WILLIAMSTON – The Andrew Jackson Lady Volunteers fell short in their hopes ofa extending their basketball season Friday night.
    The Lady Vols, down by as many as 20 points in the first half, rallied to slice the gap to three only to drop a 51-42 loss to Palmetto High School in the second round of the Class AA Upper State girls basketball playoffs.
    Bre Wright, who scored 13 points, netted seven straight points to close the AJ deficit to 45-42 with 41 seconds left.

  • DNR sets antler scoring sessions

    Antlers will abound throughout the Palmetto State as the search for new state record deer antlers gets underway during the S.C. Department of Natural Resources’ annual series of measuring sessions.
      Each year during March, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) measures deer antlers throughout the state, with a major effort during the Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic scheduled for March 23-25 at the State Fairgrounds in Columbia.

  • Bruins edge Golden Hurricanes in playoffs

         Lancaster will be seeking some hardwood revenge Tuesday night when they travel to Dorman High of Spartanburg in the Class AAAA boys Upper State semifinals.

    The 24-3 Bruins survived an upset bid from gutsy Wren to take a 53-52 win over the Golden Hurricanes on Saturday.

    The Bruins’ one-point win sends LHS to Dorman to face the Cavaliers in the Class AAAA Upstate semifinals on Tuesday night.

    Dorman defeated Richland Northeast 43-39 on Saturday night.

  • Shamrocks halt Warriors' hopes with 73-64 victory

    Indian Land High boys basketball coach Nate Smith said he knew the 2011-12 season would be a challenge with the loss of some key players off the 2010-11 hoops team which finished as the Class AA Upper State runner-up to eventual champion Keenan at the Bi-Lo Center in Columbia.

  • Clutch free throws lift Lady Vols

    The game came down to converting clutch free throws and the Andrew Jackson High girls came through.

    The Lady Vols’ Bre Wright hit two critical free throws with 9.9 seconds to play to lift AJ to a 60-58 win over Eau Claire in the opening round of the Class AA girls Upper State basketball playoffs.
