  • Gamecocks picked to win SEC East crown
    USCsports.com For the first time since joining the Southeastern Conference in 1992, the South Carolina Gamecocks are the preseason favorite to win the Eastern Division, according to a poll of media members attending the SEC Media Days in Birmingham. The defending Eastern Division Champion Gamecocks received 931 points, outdistancing Georgia (794) and Florida (731) for the top spot in the East. Carolina received 114 first-place votes, compared to 38 for Georgia and 12 for Florida.
  • Small tourney stakes high
    Age division titles and bids to the S.C. Junior Golf Association all-star state tournament will be on the line Monday and Tuesday when the Lancaster chapter of the SCJGA caps its season with the annual Roy Small Junior Championship at the Lancaster Golf Club. Eight age division crowns will be decided over two days of play at the LGC where play begins Monday morning.

          The Lancaster American Legion Post 31 junior baseball team hoped for better in the state tournament, but it didn’t happen.
  • Ozone stars open state tourney play Saturday
          The Lancaster Dixie Baseball Ozone district champions will open state tournament play Saturday in Sumter when the LDB stars play Sumter American at Patriots Park at 12:30 p.m.
  • Neff to sign with Giants
          University of South Carolina junior pitcher Steven Neff will bypass his remaining eligibility with the Gamecocks to sign a contract with the San Francisco Giants.
  • Bulldogs undefeated so far
    Jane Alford cgnews@thelancasternews.com The Carolina Bulldogs, a minor league football team owned by Matt Carnes of Indian Land, is on top of its game this season.  The team, which includes several Indian Land players, is undefeated at 4-0.   • Lancaster Ozone stars sweep Rock Hill in District 2 tourney
  • Plenty of racing action at Speedway
      Lancaster Motor Speedway will be going “old school” Saturday night with the Vintage Division headlining the evening with a big race and an autograph session during intermission. Larry Wallace Black and his Gold No. 22 car will be at the track from 6 to 7 p.m. 
  • Sun City teams win at state
    Frank Kinder For the lancaster News The Sun City Carolina Lakes pickleball team brought home 28 medals, including 10 golds, from the first official pickleball events at the S.C. Senior Sports Classic, held May 21 on the campus of Francis Marion University in Florence. 
  • Gilreath on Carolina Reds team
    Staff Reports John Gilreath of Lancaster plays for the Carolina Reds 11U travel baseball team, which is based out of Rock Hill. Gilreath is the only player from Lancaster, but the other players represent Great Falls, Chester, Rock Hill, York and Clover. The team recently returned from a tournament in Omaha, Neb., held June 17-19. The tournament was the Omaha USSSA NIT World Series Qualifier. The Reds went 5-1 against teams from Louisiana, Colorado, Iowa and Oklahoma.
