  • A special day in many ways
    It’s April 8, which this year, is Easter. April 8, without being Easter, is still a special date for me. In baseball lore, you might recall that’s the date Hank Aaron hit his historic home run in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium to pass Babe Ruth. A few seasons before the old Braves’ stadium closed, our church, First Presbyterian, took a bus trip to see the Braves play the Phillies. Do you remember the old outfield sign in left center field where Aaron’s 715th home run sailed out of the park and into history?

    Lancaster area junior golfer Anthony Sutton had an impressive weekend on the links at the Jekyll Island Cup, an invitation-only tournament held by U.S. Kids Golf on the Georgia coast.

  • Cox's one-shot win nets SCJGA Pee Wee crown
          Emily Cox won the 14th annual SCJGA Pee Wee Championship at Columbia Country Club on March 10-11. Cox won with a one-shot margin of victory in the girls’ 10-12 bracket for a two-day total of 80.
  • Shutout win helps Lancers dodge sweep
    The USCL Lancers dodged a diamond sweep from Louisburg College on Sunday afternoon. The second-ranked Hurricanes, 36-4, won the first three-games of the four-game Region X series, but the Lancers avoided the sweep with a 3-0 win over Louisburg on Sunday afternoon.

    The University of South Carolina Lancaster Lancers split four games in a weekend series with USC Salkehatchie in Allendale. The 13th-ranked Lancers, 27-6, 9-3, split a twin bill on Saturday and took one of two Sunday afternoon.

          The winning team in the fourth annual A.R. Rucker Middle School Relay for Life golf tournament posted a one-shot win in the captain’s choice event at the Lancaster Golf Club on Saturday afternoon.

  • USCL rolls with sweep of Limestone jayvees
    Staff Reports The 13th-ranked University of South Carolina Lancers rolled to a pair of non-region baseball wins, taking two from the Limestone junior varsity in Gaffney on Wednesday. The Lancers, 25-4, swept the Junior Saints, 9-3 and 11-2. In the six-run win, John McClure, 5-1, was the  winner in four innings of work. He allowed two runs, both earned, three hits, three walks and hit a batter.
  • Sutton off to fast start in US Kids
          Anthony “T” Sutton, a Buford Elementary fifth grader, has started strong this season in youth golf. Sutton has won the first four tournaments of the U.S. Kids Tour in Charlotte.
