  • Fort Mill Post 43 rallies for extra-inning win over seniors
    Fort Mill foiled the Lancaster Post 31 senior team’s return to League V Legion baseball play with an extra-inning win over P-31 on Monday night at Fort Mill High School. Fort Mill, snapping a 2-all draw, scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift Post 43 to a 3-2 win over Lancaster.

    The Lancaster American Legion Post 31 junior baseball team will seek to rebound as it swings back into action Wednesday night against Rock Hill. The juniors saw their League V win streak halted at seven Thursday night in Union where Post 22 topped the Lancaster team, 3-2.

  • Juniors remain unbeaten
    Staff Reports The Lancaster Post 31 juniors stretched their unbeaten League V baseball mark to 7-0 with a pair of league wins earlier this week. The Lancaster juniors opened the week with a 10-7 win over Chester on Tuesday night at Eggleton Field. Lancaster built a 7-0 spread after three innings and held on for the three-run win. Chandler Gardner, who pitched 5.2 innings, was the winner, allowing four hits, three runs and four walks. He struck out seven.

  • Neff, Miller taken in MLB Draft
    University of South Carolina pitcher-outfielder Steven Neff received the call of a lifetime for the third time in his baseball career, but he’s focused on the Gamecocks’ task at hand. Neff, the former Lancaster High School and Lancaster American Legion Post 31 baseball star, was one of 11 USC players drafted this week in the annual Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Neff, a junior pitcher-outfielder, was taken in the 41st round by the World Champion San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.

  • Makos open with win over Camden
    Staff Reports The Lancaster Makos opened their swim season, taking a 314-189 over Camden at the Lancaster County pool on Tuesday. The meet marked the Makos’ debut after the Lancaster County team was split this season. The Makos were led by Michaela Burton, Logan Phillips, Gracie Scott and Bryce Blanton, who posted four wins each. Anna Funderburk and Taylor Teague tallied three firsts apiece. Riley Burton, Carson Blackmon and Jonathan Catoe each tallied two firsts. Individual medley

  • More Crate Sportsman cars expected Saturday
    Michael Knight For The Lancaster News Lancaster Motor Speedway hosts seven exciting racing divisions Saturday night at the half-mile oval. LMS officials expect to see a few more Crate Sportsman cars as the Crate Sportsman drivers will be preparing for the Kenny Helms Memorial race. The Crate Sportsman division has seen some great racing this season, with a division rivalry brewing  between Kenny Ramsey and Timbo Mangum.

  • Tourney in memory of Craig continues to grow
    Staff Reports The Nucor Steel Berkeley golf tournament has hit its second decade and is going as strong as ever. The 11th annual tournament, held in memory of Lancaster native Jamie Craig, was played earlier this spring and drew its largest field of golfers, 335 participants. The 2010 tournament had 315 golfers. “This tournament continues to get larger,” said Buffy Fortner, a Nucor Steel cost accountant who has worked with the event for 10 years, including the last nine as chairman.
