  • Family Promise tourney Saturday
      Area golfers can still sign up to play in the  sixth annual Family Promise of Lancaster County golf outing on Saturday, Aug. 17 at the Lancaster Golf Club. Registration is at noon, with a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start. A light lunch will be served at noon.
  • Williams to next level with Seahawks
      Lancaster native Matt Williams is moving to the next level. Williams, who served as pitching coach at junior college baseball power Spartanburg Methodist for eight seasons, is the new pitching coach at UNC Wilmington.
  • ‘One for the old guys’
    Robert Howey rhowey@thelancasternews.com Experience was the winner in the annual Lancaster Golf Club championship on Sunday, Aug. 11. “This one is for the old guys,” said an exuberant Mike “Red Man” Kennington just after he captured the LGC title with a one-under 143 (71-72) in the two-day, 36-hole event.
  • Results mixed in early scrimmages
    Robert Howey rhowey@thelancasternews.com County coaches are hoping for better results as their teams battle in their second scrimmages this week. Coaches at Buford, Andrew Jackson and Indian Land noted mixed results in their first scrimmages. “We did some things well and then we have some areas we need to work on,” AJ coach David Moore said. “We have our share of youth and we know we’re going to have to grow up fast.” AJ visited Lee Central of Bishopville to play the Stallions at Keenan High School.
  • Rain halts, but doesn’t stop race
    Michael Knight For The Lancaster News Brandy Baker and Timbo Mangum were in the front row in the Montgomery Towing Super Street main event Saturday night, Aug. 10, at the Lancaster Super Speedway. When the green flag dropped Baker, Mangum, Walter Cook and Joey Engelbrecht all roared into turn one battling for the lead. The huge crowd stood as leader Mangum exited turn 2 and completed lap one. As the laps ticked off it was Mangum in the lead followed by Baker and then Baker’s son, Andrew Baker.

      RICHBURG – It’s impossible to know how well a football team will perform until they actually step on the field and play. If the Lewisville coaching staff were to suit up, however, there’s no question they’d be good.
  • LGC to have new champ
    Robert Howey rhowey@thelancasternews.com For the first time in three years, the Lancaster Golf Club will have a new club champion. Taylor Banks, the club champion for the last three years, will not be back to defend his title this weekend when the annual tournament is played. The two-day, 36-hole tournament opens Saturday morning and concludes Sunday afternoon.
  • Bear Hug Brawl kicks off Aug. 24
    Robert Howey rhowey@thelancasternews.com The second annual Bear Hug Brawl, a junior varsity football jamboree, is set Saturday, Aug. 24 at Buford High School’s Jackets Stadium. The jamboree is held in memory of Buford High School junior varsity football player Seth Muennich, who died after being struck by an auto in the area of Buford Middle School two years ago. Event proceeds support Seth’s Giving Tree Projects and scholarships. The foundation was named Seth’s Giving Tree after one of his favorite childhood books and its story.
  • County prep teams open scrimmages
    Staff Reports Lancaster County high school football coaches will have a good idea where their respective teams stand after today. Teams, in accordance to S.C. High School League rules, launched contact drills at mid-week. Teams can have their first official scrimmage today, and all four county teams plan to be in action on the road. Lancaster High School hits the road for a scrimmage with Class AA foe Chesterfield High School at 6 p.m. Georgetown High School was slated to be part of the scrimmage at CHS, but will not attend.
