  • Better choices, better future

    Today’s choices shape my future profusely. Sir Isaac Newton wrote and proved the Law of Physics that “for every action there is a reaction.”

    Everyone knows there are good choices and bad choices. Everyone has made each of them, more than others. The things we do today affect everything that happens in the future. Once people understand that not only the things they do, but the things people around them do, affect them just as much, they can begin to make better on difficult choices.

    “There will always be companies making sheets and towels, but we’re not likely to see a company the likes of Springs Industries ever again. Nor is there likely to be another (CEO) like Crandall Bowles, the last president of the freestanding Springs.”

    I am writing to you in reference to your comments made at the Nov. 26 County Council meeting, as quoted in the Dec. 5 issue of Carolina Gateway. I am also copying as many of the county officials that I have addresses, in addition to the Carolina Gateway. You and I have previously met and discussed some of these concerns in regard to your proposed nuisance ordinance.

  • Paper needs to change way it...

    On Dec. 1, I lost my son, Jason Payne, in an auto accident. Unless you’re a mom who has experienced the loss of a child, you will never know my grief and pain.

    My son’s accident not only made the Sunday paper, but for some reason unknown to me, the paper felt it should have been the headliner that day. I wanted to scream every time I saw a Lancaster News paper box on the day of my son’s wake.

  • Put up decorative flags that...

    I can’t believe that the people of this town would even put up flags saying Happy Holidays. No wonder things are as bad as they are in this town. No jobs, no companies wanting to come here. This is the season to celebrate Jesus’ birthday.

    If we are ashamed to mention the word Christmas in the town of Lancaster then we can’t expect great things to happen here. We shouldn’t be ashamed to say Merry Christmas. Without Christ’s birthday there would be nothing to celebrate.

  • Don’t take CHRIST out of...

    As I drove down Main Street of my hometown, Lancaster, I couldn’t help but notice that the city had installed flags on the street to celebrate the CHRISTmas season. Instead of having on them Merry CHRISTmas it was Happy Holidays.

    I couldn’t believe that my hometown was going the way of the world by removing CHRIST from CHRISTmas.

    I say shame on you City Council if you allowed this to happen. But we still have the CHRISTmas parade thank you, and not the holiday parade.

    What’s next? If CHRIST is left out of CHRISTmas we have an empty celebration.

  • Hughes inspires others to do their...

    The recent resignation of Ernie Hughes as head football coach at Andrew Jackson marks the end of an coaching era in Lancaster County.

    Hughes has been working high school football sidelines for 35 seasons. Over a third of that time was spent in Lancaster County.

    Hughes also served as the head football coach at neighboring Buford High School. A Winnsboro native, Hughes guided the Jackets from 1989-1994.

    He served as the Volunteers’ football coach from 2003 to this past fall.

  • City put up ‘ugly&...

    I’m a retired decorator from the South Park Mall area, but I live in downtown Lancaster. I noticed that the city of Lancaster has put up these ugly happy holiday flags instead of the beautiful decorations they have had in Christmases past. I was very disappointed in the lack of Christmas spirit from the city of Lancaster. The city has the power to put up the Christmas decorations and celebrate the birth of Christ.

    After all this is the Christmas season.

  • Lancaster needs a humane society

    The volunteers for the proposed Humane Society in Lancaster are not rich. They are just big hearted and smart.

    The purpose of the organization is to help people become better pet owners as well as save as many animals as possible.

    Finding a way to give people low cost spay and neutering to cut down on unwanted litters is very important and can be done.

    I had my last shelter rescue spayed and all her shots for $57.50 thanks to B.J. and Krista finding a way.

    With the Christmas season upon us, I would like to ask the citizens of South Carolina to consider giving themselves a gift with some lasting value. Unlike a purchased gift from a retailer, this gift is free. It is the gift of your right to vote.

    On Jan. 19, South Carolina will hold primary elections. I urge all citizens of South Carolina to consider Ron Paul as your choice for nominee in the Republican Primary.

  • Volunteers, paper misguided about...

    The intent of those wanting to start a no kill animal shelter, and your endorsement of the idea, is admirable but misguided.

    As one having been involved with owning, breeding and showing dogs for over 54 years, I have seen this type of activity in many places and in each case it turns into a disaster after a while.

    They, and the newspaper, speak of the more than 4,200 animals put to sleep at the shelter in a year. And they, and the newspaper, want these animals kept alive indefinitely, or until someone adopts them.

  • Carol Parker was an inspiration to...

    I would like to send my condolences to the Carol W. Parker family. I was out of town when Mrs. Parker went to be with the Lord and did not know it until I returned.

    She was my chorus teacher 38 years ago at South Junior High School. She was a great inspiration to everyone who knew her. I was blessed to have her touch my life.

    Not only did Mrs. Parker teach us to sing our best and blend our voices together, she also taught all of her students to respect each other, strive to be the best they could be.

  • Costs too great for animal shelter

    Bob Hunter, Krista Moore and B.J. Mishoe must be rich or foolish to start a separate shelter for unwanted animals. Have they considered the cost of a building, feed, medication, spay and neuter fees and employees to take care of 5,146 or more animals a year if the animals are not spayed or neutered?

    To spay or neuter an animal costs between $60 and $100.

    Do they plan to keep the animals in pens their entire life if not adopted?

  • Buying winter robe not an easy task

    After 25 years I decided I needed a new winter bath robe. That sounds like an easy task. The bath robes looked like cotton balls at the first store I visited. When I questioned why the robes weren’t pretty, the salesman said the robes were “practical and warm and no one would see you in it anyway.” Well, I didn’t want my neighbors to see me in a huge cotton ball walking to my paper box.

    Who designs these robes anyway?
