Timbo Mangum pulled away from Benji Knight to grab the checkers in SECA Crate Late Model action at Lancaster Super Speedway on July 9.
The win was Mangum’s second of the night, as he also won the Vintage Division feature.
When the green flag dropped, Mangum, Knight, Manley Chaney and Travis Steele were all battling for the lead. Mangum was able to lead the four down the backstretch, with Knight in his tire tracks.
A late-afternoon thunderstorm in the area forced the Monster Mini Stocks Association to postpone the July 16 running of the third-annual Buddy Crook Memorial at Lancaster Super Speedway until later this month.
A four-cylinder race car series, the MMSA races at various dirt tracks in the Carolinas and Georgia. The $2,500 event here is one of the highest-paying stops on the series tour.
MARION – The Lancaster Dixie Softball Ponytails all-stars saw their state title hopes end Monday with a 17-6 loss to Bamberg.
The ponytails all-stars rebounded to stay alive in state tournament play Sunday with a resounding 18-2 win over host Marion.
In Monday’s game, the ponytails, ages 11-12, trailed Bamberg, 5-0, but rallied in the third inning to tie the score at 5-all.
However, Bamberg answered with five runs to build a 10-5 advantage and then kept it for the 11-run victory.

Lancaster Super Speedway will host the third-annual Ralph W. “Buddy” Crook Memorial on July 16.
Known as one of the area’s most popular and respected dirt racers by fans and fellow drivers alike, Crook raced in several divisions, including hobby six cylinders, four cylinders at the high-banked, half-mile dirt track for more than three decades. He died in February 2014 after a battle with cancer and the memorial race is held in his honor.
Inman’s American Legion Post 45 swept Lancaster’s Post 31 this week in three straight games during the second round of the S.C. American Legion Upper State baseball playoffs.
On Tuesday night in Lancaster, Inman shut down Lancaster for an 11-0 win.
Then on Wednesday, Post 45 won a two-day rain-delayed deadlocked game, 5-4, on a single by Hunter Gneisig in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Post 31 never got a chance to swing a bat in the delayed part of the contest, since Inman was the home team.
Three-year-old Charlee Rivers is developing quite a following.
Charlee, who was born with a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome, may need a new heart.
A group of supporters led by local youth coach and official Fuzzy Bass are holding a two-day softball fundraiser in Heath Springs later this month to help her family with medical costs. Charlee is the daughter of Chucky and Dustee Rivers.
YORK – The Lancaster Dixie Baseball 14U Dixie Boys All Stars outscored and outpitched the Kershaw County American League All Star team, as well as host York, to take two lopsided weekend wins in the 2016 S.C. District 10 Dixie Boys tournament.
In Saturday’s opening game, Lancaster topped the Kershaw stars 15-2.
Sunday night’s game, the local Dixie Baseball team pounded York 28-0.
The Lancaster stars were scheduled to face York again Tuesday night in the District 10 championship; however, those results were not available before press time.
YORK – The Lancaster Dixie Baseball 14U Dixie Boys All Stars have punched their tickets to next week’s state tournament in Aiken.
The local all-star team defeated the host York All Stars team, 15-0, in three innings of play Tuesday night to win the 2016 S.C. District 10 Dixie Boys championship.
Good pitching still beats good hitting, but when both come together at once, watch out, said All Stars coach Jimmy Jackson.
And the numbers do tell the story.
HARTSVILLE – The Lancaster 10U Dixie Softball Angels team won its opening game at Byerly Park before losing twice to be eliminated from the state tournament.
After opening state play Saturday with a 7-1 win over host Hartsville, the Angels stars fell to Latta, 10-0, on Sunday. Dillon knocked the local girls from tourney play Monday with a solid, 6-0 win.
Lancaster Angels coach Spring McManus said strong pitching was the difference.
