Stellar seasons for USCL teams

The 2013 University of South Carolina Lancaster spring semester might be history, but a pair of  USCL spring sports teams are still going strong.
The Lancers’ golf team and baseball squad have extended their seasons into post-season play.
The 25-12 USCL golf team, under the leadership of coach Ricky Walters, is headed to the National Junior College national tournament after winning the Region X tournament with a sudden death win over Wake Tech at the Boscobel Golf Course in Pendleton last month.

Hinson nabs first LSS win this...

Steve “Burn “Em Down” Hinson captured the win in the Cauthen Motors Pure Street main event for his first win of the 2013 racing season.

Time for Lancaster to update...

We went to a Dixie Baseball game in Chester with a friend who has a son who plays with a Lancaster Dixie team. The Rodman Sports Complex is beautiful. How long do we have to deal with what we have? Lancaster’s economic situation is not as bad as Chester and yet, Chester has that nice complex. Lancaster parking stinks and has for years and facilities are not maintained the way they should be. Furthermore, the location isn’t the greatest.

Bill: Business as usual or is...

Several weeks ago we joined with other South Carolina groups to expose an effort by House leaders to sabotage ethics reform and evade disclosure and independent scrutiny.
House leaders’ plan to decriminalize ethics violations and force citizen activists to become lobbyists was outrageous, and a diverse coalition of citizen groups jointly and publicly denounced it.

Writer commends Lage’s comments

Just the other day I started an opinion piece, which I discarded as being a bit over the hill.
Then the May 1 edition of The Lancaster News there was an excellent letter, “Good plan needed to accommodate progress,”  from Edgewater resident John Lage.  Mr. Lage is a transplant from Rhode Island who appears to understand the reasons which have generated complaints from the northern section of the county. Many of which have been expressed on this page.

Summer classes underway at USC

University of South Carolina
The University of South Carolina’s expansion to three full semesters is underway, with classes beginning this week.
Officials say student response, particularly among juniors, has been strong to On Your Time: Summer at Carolina, a new program of summer courses offered over eight sessions that range from one to 12 weeks. Because of its flexible design, course registration for the later summer sessions is still open, allowing students to progress toward their degree and working toward the goal of graduating in four years.

Kershaw Town Council passes...

KERSHAW – Across-the-board salary increases account for the bulk of the change in the proposed budget for the town of Kershaw.

At its Monday, May 20, meeting, Kershaw Town Council unanimously approved first reading of the $3.5 million budget for 2013-14.

The vote was 6-0. Kershaw Mayor Wayne Rhodes was absent.

Town Administrator Bryan Pettit said all town employees are scheduled to receive a 3 percent pay raise beginning with the upcoming fiscal year, which begins July 1.

When hauling trash, keep it...

I want to share a recent experience I had on Dixie School Road in the Buford community. About 2 p.m. on March 28, I met a flatbed truck with a gray tarp. Debris was flying from this vehicle. Some hit my car and damaged it. I have since had it repaired. I feel sure the driver will recognize himself or herself if they read this letter.  But that is in the past.
The point I’m trying to make is that if you are hauling trash, be sure it is secure. This was only a car. The next time it could be a person, even a child.

Let’s put an end to violence

Editor’s note: Following is a letter Lancaster resident Randolph English sent to President Barack Obama.
We are members of a small united group of concerned citizens voicing our hopes to you. We are writing about the high rate of homicides in the United State connected to gun violence. We are asking that the members of the cabinets come together in an agreement in implementing a law to control this situation. We are not sure of the legal steps that need to be followed.

County to arm animal control

Worried for the safety of the county’s animal control officers, who often face dangerous animals with no protection other than a catchpole, Lancaster County Council has decided it’s time to arm several of its employees.
Council unanimously voted at its Monday, May 13, meeting to approve having all animal control officers trained by the end of the month to carry long guns and to also be appropriately armed.
