Sacrifice was for nothing good

“Sometimes, for the greater good, sacrifices must be made.” While the author of this quote is unknown, politics has often demanded such sacrifice for a greater good in our society.
Our state is blessed with magnificent mountains, fabulous foothills and beautiful beaches, bringing folks from across the country to vacation. In fact, tourism is one of the major contributors to the state’s economy, job market and tax base. Six years ago, the Legislature was confronted with such a question of sacrifice, for the greater good.

Thomas & Betts managers discuss safety, growth at annual LCEDC meeting

With Lancaster’s Thomas & Betts facility on the verge of increasing its workforce, plant manager Mike Scutella credited their expansion to “culture change.”
That change, along with an emphasis on safety and lean manufacturing, were the focus of Scutella’s presentation to a packed house of business and government leaders during the Lancaster County Economic Development Corporation’s annual meeting April 23.

No injuries reported in incident

A Kershaw man is suspected to be the person who fired multiple gunshots at a dark blue Honda Accord late last month.
Lancaster County sheriff’s deputies came to an apartment home on Truesdale Street in Heath Springs shortly after 8 p.m. April 27 in response to a call about someone shooting a vehicle.
The Honda’s driver’s side windows and the passenger’s side rear window were shattered. A deputy also saw what appeared to be bullet holes in the driver’s side doors, according to a sheriff’s office incident report.

Tax hike possible for city residents

Lancaster city officials are looking at raising property taxes while increasing water and sewer rates as part of the 2013-14 budget.
City Council discussed those proposed hikes during a special planning session Tuesday, April 30, at Lancaster City Hall.
Finance Director James Absher led the presentation, which outlined projected revenues and planned expenses for the next fiscal year, as will as information on other proposals such as new staff positions.

BHS softball bids to stay alive in field

Buford, seeking to stay alive in the Class AA Upper State softball playoffs, hit the road Tuesday night to face Pendleton in an elimination game.
The Lady Jackets were slated to face Pendleton on Monday, but heavy rain washed out the game and it was reset for Tuesday.
Pendleton fell to Crescent, 12-3 in the opening round of the Class AA Upper State playoffs on Saturday, May 4.
Crescent then defeated Chesterfield, 10-0 in five innings on Monday, May 6.
Chesterfield will host the winner of the Buford vs. Pendleton game on Wednesday, May 8.

Brunson signs with Bob Jones

Sha’Ron Brunson is taking her game to the next level, but she will still be playing for the Bruins.
Brunson, a three-year starter for the Lancaster High Lady Bruins, is taking her game to Bob Jones University in Greenville, which is also known as the Bruins.
“That’s pretty cool,” Brunson said. “We get to keep the same name.”
But Brunson’s decision to join the BJU Bruins was more than a name.

Man pleads guilty on federal gun possession charge

COLUMBIA – A Lancaster man faces at least 15 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a gun possession charge Thursday, May 2.

William I. Satterwhite, 52, pleaded guilty in federal court to being a felon in possession of a firearm, a violation of the federal Title 18 law, according to a press release from U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles.

Nettles said U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie accepted the plea and will impose a sentence after she has reviewed the pre-sentence report, which will be prepared by the U.S. Probation Office.

Crescent ends Buford's season

Buford High’s run to the Class AA Upper State softball championship was halted on Friday, May 10.

Crescent High School of Iva, 23-5, blanked the Lady Jackets, 10-0 in six innings.

Deserving honorees

The 2013 Celebration of Excellence, the annual Lancaster County School District’s salute to the best in education and service, included its annual induction of hall of fame members.
Four deserving individuals, who made an impact in the classroom and beyond, took center stage on Monday, April 29, at the Lancaster Golf Club’s Fairway Room.
The latest inductees included Bennett Gunter, C.C. Hanson, Ann Hough and Floyd White.

Don’t abuse handicapped parking

Do you know someone who is truly handicapped or disabled? My husband is and, believe me, it has made me so aware of the stress he has in using the motorized carts that some stores have, using the facilities and parking issues.
I believe we have misused the word “handicap.”
Even though patients with heart conditions are requested to walk, they ask their doctors for a handicapped tag, so they can park close to stores’ entrances with little to no walking.
