Why must students go to school on Memorial Day?

Why, given the solemn importance the holiday, do Lancaster County students have to go to school on Memorial Day?
As always, Memorial Day is observed on the fourth Monday of May. This year, the federal holiday falls on May 27, the first day of the last week of school.
The Memorial Day question is one patriotic parents such as Lisa Lambert of Indian Land ask of school officials every year.

Lancaster Super Speedway featured some top-notch dirt track racing Saturday, May 12.

The LSS track was smooth as glass Saturday night when the track crew had it in top shape.

Drive-by shooting at Pardue Street apartment complex

Two Lancaster residents were not harmed after someone shattered their glass front door during an apparent drive-by shooting May 3. 

Police raced to the 1800 block of Pardue Street about 11:35 p.m. after receiving a 911 call that someone fired between five and six gunshots in that area, according to a Lancaster Police Department incident report. 

Officers arrived to find a large crowd in the area and also noticed a shattered screen door at a nearby apartment, the report said. 

Ted Vick now facing another DUI charge

 For the second time in less than a year, state Rep. Ted M. Vick (D-53) of Chesterfield has been arrested in Columbia on a charge of driving under the influence. District 53 includes the Spring Hill precinct in eastern Lancaster County. 

The latest incident reportedly happened on the Statehouse grounds Tuesday evening, May 14, when an officer saw Vick, 40, staggering as he went into a parking garage there.

Eight officers listed on law officers monument

– B. Frank Sowell of the Lancaster Police Department died July 4, 1937. He was 39. Sowell and his partner saw a suspicious vehicle sitting under a light at Main Street and Chesterfield Avenue about 1:30 a.m. When Sowell’s partner approached the car, it sped off. After a car chase, the suspect’s vehicle crashed and Sowell was shot twice with a 12-gauge shotgun.

– Patrolman Walter Bell of the S.C. Highway Patrol died Feb. 4, 1939. He was killed in a car crash in Kershaw while on patrol. 

Langley’s win streak continues at Speedway

Pure Street Division driver Josh Langley captured his third win in a row Saturday, May 4 at Lancaster Super Speedway.
Langley was on the front row with Matthew Cauthen. When the green flag dropped, it was Langley, Cauthen, Jesse Carson and Steve Hinson roaring into turn one battling for the lead.
Exiting turn two, the Langley Rocket Ship took command and never looked back for his seventh win this season.

BHS softball bids to stay alive in field

Buford, seeking to stay alive in the Class AA Upper State softball playoffs, hit the road Tuesday night to face Pendleton in an elimination game.
The Lady Jackets were slated to face Pendleton on Monday, but heavy rain washed out the game and it was reset for Tuesday.
Pendleton fell to Crescent, 12-3 in the opening round of the Class AA Upper State playoffs on Saturday, May 4.
Crescent then defeated Chesterfield, 10-0 in five innings on Monday, May 6.
Chesterfield will host the winner of the Buford vs. Pendleton game on Wednesday, May 8.

Vols net region golf title

The Andrew Jackson Volunteers golf team is “fore real.”
The Vols, who went unbeaten in regular-season Region IV-AA play, kept it going in the region tournament at the Lancaster Golf Club on Wednesday, May 8.
AJ, 25-4, posted a 657 team score to top the six-team field for its first region golf championship since 1982.
Freshman Logan Sowell led the Vols’ effort, shooting a 149 (73-76) to earn medalist honors for the one-day, 36-hole tournament.
“I hit the ball well and putted well,’ Sowell said.

South Carolina must address its road issues

What is the most pressing issue facing South Carolina? Is it attempting to nullify Obamacare? Is it the question of whether to expand Medicaid coverage? Is it putting up legal barricades to block possible federal curbs on gun rights? While my email inbox would seem to indicate so, I believe our No. 1 concern is addressing the dire condition of the state’s roads and bridges.
