Lancers earn district bid as X runner-up

The University of South Carolina Lancaster Lancers have earned a bid to the National Junior College Athletic Association Eastern District baseball tournament.
The Lancers, with a runner-up finish in the Region X tournament in Burlington, N.C., on Wednesday, May 10, reaped the coveted bid.
“Our backs were really to the wall, but we came back fighting and I’m really proud of this team and the character they showed through long games and rain delays.

LSS hosts six divisions of racing Saturday

Lancaster Super Speedway will host six divisions of racing action Saturday, May 11.
Josh Langley and Marty Spittle will have to start in the rear of the field after winning three straight races in their respected divisions.
Langley will have to start in the rear of the field in a stout Pure Street Division, and Spittle will have to start in the rear of the field in a very competitive Vintage Division.

Buford blanks Griffins, faces Pendleton

Buford opened the Class AA Upper State soccer playoffs with a 4-0 win over Fairfield Central.
The 13-4 Jackets, the No. 5 seed in the Upstate, held a 2-0 lead at the half.
Junior Andrew “Red” Ellis scored first in the 15th minute on an assist from senior Trey Starnes. Senior James Shehane scored his first career goal in the 29th minute on an unassisted shot from the edge of the 18-yard box. Keeper Corey Bracey had 3 saves in the first half.

Rams down Vols to end playoff run

Chesterfield halted the Andrew Jackson Volunteers’ postseason baseball hopes with a 10-2 win in the Class AA Upper State championship tournament on Wednesday, May 8 at AJ.
The Vols took an early 1-0 lead, but the Rams rallied for eight runs to forge an 8-1 advantage after four innings.
Taylor King led the Rams with three hits, two doubles, a two-run homer, and four RBIs.
Dylan Woodward, a southpaw, went seven frames for the win.
Chandler Neal, Kipp Rollings and Austin Wrape each pitched for the Vols.

County athletes look to state meets this weekend

A host of county athletes will be seeking state titles at the state track meets at Lower Richland High School on Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11.
Indian Land has several athletes who will be competing for state crowns in the Class AA state meet.
Destiny Todd, who won the 800-meter run in the Class AA Upstate meet, will run in that event and with the 4 x 800 team which includes Imani Jernegan, Morgan Engstrom and Tianah Miller.
Senior James Gregory, who finished fourth in the Class AA Upstate meet, will be running in that event at the state meet.

Vols net region golf title

The Andrew Jackson Volunteers golf team is “fore real.”
The Vols, who went unbeaten in regular-season Region IV-AA play, kept it going in the region tournament at the Lancaster Golf Club on Wednesday, May 8.
AJ, 25-4, posted a 657 team score to top the six-team field for its first region golf championship since 1982.
Freshman Logan Sowell led the Vols’ effort, shooting a 149 (73-76) to earn medalist honors for the one-day, 36-hole tournament.
“I hit the ball well and putted well,’ Sowell said.

Keep alcohol away from young people

Cinco de Mayo. High school graduation parties. Fourth of July cookouts. College football tailgating. What do all of these have in common?
All are terrific opportunities to gather together with friends and family. Unfortunately, these activities can also present an increased risk of alcohol-related problems such as underage drinking or driving under the influence. Not here you say? Nothing can be further from the truth. Almost half, 47 percent, of high-school age students report having used alcohol at least once in their lifetime and 20 percent have used in the past 30 days.

South Carolina must address its road issues

What is the most pressing issue facing South Carolina? Is it attempting to nullify Obamacare? Is it the question of whether to expand Medicaid coverage? Is it putting up legal barricades to block possible federal curbs on gun rights? While my email inbox would seem to indicate so, I believe our No. 1 concern is addressing the dire condition of the state’s roads and bridges.

Managing preserves resources

A few weeks ago as I was buying greeting cards, I noticed this statement on the backs of several: “This card is made with paper from sustainably managed forests.”

What exactly does that mean?

Sustainable forest management (SFM) is a complex concept, but essentially its goal is to make certain that the forest resources the world enjoys today will continue to be available in the future.

SFM promotes practices that generate timber and non-timber forest products with respect for the highest ecological, ethical and social standards.

Gospel choir concert
Centennial A.M.E. Zion Church, 1852 Flat Creek Road, will hold a gospel choir concert at 7 p.m. today, May 10, and Saturday, May 11. The concert will celebrate the choir’s 57th anniversary and includes singing, fellowship and food. Other guest groups will appear.
