The University of South Carolina Lancaster Lancers had a short stay in the NJCAA Eastern District baseball tournament on Friday, May 17.

Summer classes underway at USC

The University of South Carolina’s expansion to three full semesters is underway, with classes beginning this week.
Officials say student response, particularly among juniors, has been strong to On Your Time: Summer at Carolina, a new program of summer courses offered over eight sessions that range from one to 12 weeks. Because of its flexible design, course registration for the later summer sessions is still open, allowing students to progress toward their degree and working toward the goal of graduating in four years.

Gospel choir concert
Centennial A.M.E. Zion Church, 1852 Flat Creek Road, will hold a gospel choir concert at 7 p.m. today, May 10, and Saturday, May 11. Bishops edge Warriors for Class AA state soccer title

GILBERT – Bishop England High School freshman Joel Bunting's golden goal was just that.

Bunting's nine-yard shot with 19 seconds left in the first of the two five-minute sudden-death overtime periods gave the Bishops a stunning 4-3 win over Indian Land for the Class AA state soccer championship at Gilbert High School's Leon Price Field on Saturday, May 18.

County to arm animal control

Worried for the safety of the county’s animal control officers, who often face dangerous animals with no protection other than a catchpole, Lancaster County Council has decided it’s time to arm several of its employees.
Council unanimously voted at its Monday, May 13, meeting to approve having all animal control officers trained by the end of the month to carry long guns and to also be appropriately armed.

Lady Jackets stay alive with road victory

The Buford Lady Yellow Jackets hit the road again Thursday in hopes of continuing their postseason run in the Class AA Upper State softball playoffs.
The Lady Jackets, who captured the district softball title, downed Pendleton, 12-6 in a Class AA Upper State championship round elimination game on Wednesday, May 8.
Buford, which was rained out with Pendleton on Monday night at PHS, made a trip to Pendleton on Tuesday when the game was played, but not completed.
The game Tuesday was rained out in the top of the fifth inning with the game tied at 4-all.

Managing preserves resources

A few weeks ago as I was buying greeting cards, I noticed this statement on the backs of several: “This card is made with paper from sustainably managed forests.”

What exactly does that mean?

Sustainable forest management (SFM) is a complex concept, but essentially its goal is to make certain that the forest resources the world enjoys today will continue to be available in the future.

SFM promotes practices that generate timber and non-timber forest products with respect for the highest ecological, ethical and social standards.

Investigation moves forward in Camp Creek Road wreck/death

The investigation into a fatal two-vehicle wreck that killed a Monroe, N.C. Man along Camp Creek Road on Tuesday, May 7, is moving forward, though charges have yet to be filed.

Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Matt Shaw said there are few updates on the wreck, which killed Jeffrey Whitener, 26, after he was ejected from his Honda at a sharp curve along the road, though a joint team of investigators are hard at work collecting evidence.
