The Buford High School baseball team capped play in the Founders Federal Credit Union Spring Break Classic at Cheraw High School with an 11-5 win over Wilson High School of Florence on Tuesday afternoon.
The six-run Jackets win gave BHS a third-place finish in the two-day tournament field with a 1-3-1 record.
Buford went 0-2-1 on opening day Monday at Cheraw High, falling to Central, Cheraw and finishing in a 0-0 tie with Wilson of Florence due to the tournament time limit.
The Lancaster Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will host its biennial Jabberwock Gala at 6 p.m. this Saturday in the Lancaster High School Auditorium.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.
Miss Jabberwock 2017 will be crowned and scholarships will be awarded to the participants on Saturday. This year’s gala theme is “Motown: Dancing with Heart & Soul” and there are 10 contestants.
They include Nia Blakeney, Ashton Gilliam, Nakaila King, Khloe Perry and Samaria Truesdale in the Wee Miss Division.
Lancaster County is becoming a healthier place to live.
New state health rankings show the county improved from 21st to 18th among the 46 counties in the past year, but still lags behind in several areas.
The data come from the eighth-annual County Health Rankings report from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), which compared counties across the country.
Driver Savannah Lynn Ashley, 20, of Heath Springs was airlifted to a Charlotte-area hospital for treatment after being entrapped for 45 minutes in this one-car crash Wednesday in the Flint Ridge community. The wreck happened about 2:15 p.m. near the intersection of Flint Ridge Road and Dan Funderburk Road. The S.C. Highway Patrol said Ashley’s 2005 Ford SUV ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, skidded across both lanes and struck a tree. Her condition is unknown.
Lindsay Pettus Greenway volunteers will celebrate Earth Day this Saturday with outdoor activities and a “sneak peek walk” along the future greenway’s path.
Events begin at 8:30 a.m. with the Seth’s Hope 5K run/walk at Lancaster High School, and other activities will continue into the afternoon.
A Lancaster man was arrested Thursday on multiple charges after allegedly firing shots into two cars occupied by a total of five adults and five children.
Ja’Mes Marcell Blair, 24, is charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and possession of a stolen pistol.
Blair’s bond has been denied and he is jailed at the county detention center.
Construction for new multipurpose buildings at Lancaster and Buford high schools begins this week and will cause a slight change in parking at LHS.
Lancaster High’s multipurpose building will be east of the school, between LearnTV and gymnasium area.
Students are asked to park in the upper student parking lot, said LHS Interim Principal Rosalyn Mood, noting the building will be built atop the lower parking lot.
