‘Old Henry’ chronicles the trials of growing old

“Old Henry,” a six-part short-format mini-series, will be aired in the same fashion as INSP’s “Moments” initiative.
Shown during primetime programming, the 90-to-120-second videos have gained a national audience with their topics, which include “Moments of Truth,” “Moments of Hope,” “Moments of Insight” and the get-out-the-tissues “Moments of Valor.” The latter is a partnership between INSP and The Medal of Honor Foundation that features Medal of Honor recipients.

Woman attacked through window

A Kershaw woman called 911 after a man she knew allegedly broke her bedroom window and grabbed her by the hair.
Deputies responded to the vandalism and assault call about 2:30 a.m. June 9 in the 6100 block of Old Lancaster Highway in Kershaw, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
Deputies spoke with the woman at the scene who said the assault happened shortly after she returned home from watching a race in Lancaster and had put her child to bed.

VA seeks info on Korean War vets

Calling all Korean War veterans: a local effort is underway to find any and all surviving veterans for special recognition in this, the 60th anniversary of the end of the three-year war in 1953.
The Lancaster County Veterans Affairs Office is trying to collect and identify names and addresses of all Korean War veterans here to be recognized July 15 during a patriotic service at the Columbia Convention Center.

School board approves teacher’s termination

The Lancaster County school board has upheld a recommendation to fire Andrew Jackson High School science teacher Doug Elder for what is deemed as a pattern of inappropriate behavior.

The disciplinary action, taken Thursday, June 6, against Elder followed deliberations in a rare open termination hearing, a quasi-judicial disciplinary proceeding similar to a trial.

Most often heard in closed session, Elder’s hearing was held in open session at his request with him acting in his own defense.

Woman points gun at driver

An altercation between two women reportedly led to one pointing a gun at the other while driving along Rock Street.
A Lancaster woman who was visibly upset came to the Municipal Justice Center on East Arch Street about 6:45 p.m. June 5 to report somebody pointing a pistol at her, according to a Lancaster Police Department incident report.
The woman said she was dropping somebody off at the corner of Rock Street and Chesterfield Avenue when a woman she knows pointed a black pistol at her car  from the passenger side of a white Kia four-door, the report said.

Authorities search for serial Aldi shoplifter

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is seeking  the public’s help in identifying a serial shoplifter at the Aldi grocery store on Charlotte Highway (U.S. 521) in Indian Land.
In a press release issued Friday, Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Matt Shaw said a man caught on surveillance video shoplifting at the grocery store is believed to have been involved in multiple incidents there.
The most recent, Shaw said, was June 4 when the man reportedly stole meat valued at $293 from the store.

Citizens deserve better from judges

To all of our so-called district judges – your system of dealing out justice sucks.
Once again, we read in The Lancaster News where another career violent criminal is set loose to do more violent crimes – even more violent crimes than the ones before.
The article about the Samuel thug (Markevious Demond Samuel) being out of jail after being convicted on so may previous counts of violent crimes makes me and every other Lancaster County citizen sick to our stomachs.

Another ‘most wanted’ arrest

One of Lancaster County’s “Most Wanted” was tracked down June 1 after he was arrested by Fort Lawn police officers during a traffic checkpoint.
Justin Edward Ellis, 28, of Fort Lawn, was transferred to the Lancaster County Detention Center shortly after he was taken into custody by Fort Lawn police officers, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
Fort Lawn officers noticed Ellis had several active outstanding warrants in Lancaster County and turned him over to a deputy at the Catawba Fish Camp, the report said.

We search the various greeting cards for just the right words. Words that adequately reflect how we feel in our hearts for that important man.
Today is that important man’s special day – Father’s Day. It’s a day set aside to thank that man who plays such a pivotal role in our lives. He provides and protects his family. His love is unconditional. A father’s daily presence in children’s lives provides a stable family foundation.

York Tech offers instant enrollment, scholarships

It’s not too late for 2013 high school graduates to get into college this fall, even if applications haven’t already been filed.
From 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, York Technical College, 452 S. Anderson Road in Rock Hill will host Connect YTC: Enrollment Day 2013, said Michael McAllister, the college’s marketing coordinator for college advancement.
