Change our gun laws

The suicide of Adams Lanza, the man who went on a killing rampage in Sandy Hook Elementary School, reminds me of Judas Iscariot, the disciple who killed himself after betraying Jesus. Both are examples or greed and mental illness.
My question is why are so many people buying guns since the Sandy Hook massacre? Yes, I know guns don’t kill. People do. And a bullet doesn’t have anyone’s name on it, so innocent people get killed.

County athletes look to state...

A host of county athletes will be seeking state titles at the state track meets at Lower Richland High School on Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11.
Indian Land has several athletes who will be competing for state crowns in the Class AA state meet.
Destiny Todd, who won the 800-meter run in the Class AA Upstate meet, will run in that event and with the 4 x 800 team which includes Imani Jernegan, Morgan Engstrom and Tianah Miller.
Senior James Gregory, who finished fourth in the Class AA Upstate meet, will be running in that event at the state meet.

Buford blanks Griffins, faces...

Buford opened the Class AA Upper State soccer playoffs with a 4-0 win over Fairfield Central.
The 13-4 Jackets, the No. 5 seed in the Upstate, held a 2-0 lead at the half.
Junior Andrew “Red” Ellis scored first in the 15th minute on an assist from senior Trey Starnes. Senior James Shehane scored his first career goal in the 29th minute on an unassisted shot from the edge of the 18-yard box. Keeper Corey Bracey had 3 saves in the first half.

Reserve money to fund new 911...

Reserve money will be used to ensure the city of Lancaster’s 911 system is meeting state standards.
At its Tuesday, May 14, meeting, City Council voted unanimously to use up to $12,000 to buy a new digital recorder for the 911 emergency telephone lines at the Municipal Justice Center.
Lancaster Police Chief Harlean Howard said the current digital recorder no longer operates to its fullest capacity.

Sunrise Summer Camp starts June 3

KERSHAW – Here’s something to get your children away from the TV, computer and video games.

Organizers are getting the word out about Kershaw’s Sunrise Summer Camp, which offers a variety of activities for children ages 5 through 13.

The camp, which has run about 10 years now, will be held at the Kershaw Recreation Center off Close Circle.

It begins June 3 and ends Aug. 16.

Council discusses closing up...

A tight county budget and differing opinions on how best to use the county’s historic jail may keep the building unused a little longer than expected.
County Administrator Steve Willis brought the issue up for discussion at Lancaster County Council’s Monday, May 13 meeting.
Council has been mulling options for how best to use the building, located on West Gay Street, since discovering severe cracks in its ceiling in June 2010.
Talks began again last month after stabilization work on the ceilings and walls was finally completed.

LSS hosts six divisions of...

Lancaster Super Speedway will host six divisions of racing action Saturday, May 11.
Josh Langley and Marty Spittle will have to start in the rear of the field after winning three straight races in their respected divisions.
Langley will have to start in the rear of the field in a stout Pure Street Division, and Spittle will have to start in the rear of the field in a very competitive Vintage Division.

LSS hosts Driving for the Dream

One of Lancaster Super Speedway’s special nights of the season is set for Saturday, May 18.

LSS will hosts its annual Driving for the Dream, a fundraiser for the Lancaster Dream Team.

Future generations need a...

I would like to respond to Phil Noble’s column, “Nullification – are these guys nuts?” in the April 10 edition. The frustration expressed in Mr. Nobles’ article is understandable, especially if he is not from South Carolina. For those of us, who are descendants of families who have live in the Palmetto state for more than 300 years, view nullification as natural as a squirrel eating Statehouse nuts. Hopefully, this does not apply to the nuts he say are inside the capitol building.
