Buford holds off Knights for...

 

BUFORD – Buford held off a hard-charging North Central Knights team that took the Yellow Jackets to the wire Friday night at Buford Stadium.

Buford recovered a clutch onside kick with 1:14 left to seal the 41-36 win for the Jackets’ sixth victory of the season on BHS Senior Night.

The Knights outscored 11th-ranked Buford 24-13 in the second half behind the passing of quarterback Bubba Williamson. Williamson threw four TD passes in the final half, but ran out of time.

Sistare takes Pigskin Picks top...

Lori Sistare “Bright” is shining brightest at the peak of the Pigskin Picks this week.

Sistare’s 13-7 week vaulted her into first place ahead of sister picker Mandy Catoe, who slipped with an 11-9 showing.

Catoe held a one-game edge, but Sistare shot to first.

Sistare, an avid Gamecocks fan, was happy with the USC win, but savored it in splendid fashion as the Gamecocks held on to top Rocky Top with a 15-9 road win to give her the Picks lead.

Talented Stallions dash by Bruins

 

ROCK HILL – The Lancaster Battlin’ Bruins, living up to their nickname as much as anytime on the 2017 football season, gave it a good shot, but top-rated South Pointe had too much firepower in a 45-10 win on Friday night.

The Stallions, ranked No. 5 nationally with an 8-0, 3-0 mark, celebrated their homecoming win later than expected due to the Bruins’ game effort.

SPHS, up 31-10 and in control, sealed the game with two quick touchdowns in the final period.

HEATH SPRINGS – Faced with the likelihood of losing the town’s five part-time employees, the Heath Springs Town Council voted Tuesday night to give them an across-the-board 9 percent pay raise.
But hang on: that doesn’t mean the employees will be bringing home more money.
It’s to offset the 9 percent contribution that the part-time workers must start paying into the state retirement system.

Naturalist Josh Arrants will wrap up this year’s Katawba Valley Land Trust Speaker Series on Thursday at USC Lancaster.

Arrants will speak at 7 p.m. in the Carole Ray Dowling building about how the military and industries manage wildlife and biodiversity on their properties. He will also share his own stories from two decades of experience as a naturalist and ornithologist.

Arrants said he wants Thursday’s audience to understand conservation is important.

Community Foundation awards...

The Lancaster County Community Foundation has handed out its annual grants, totaling $9,600 this year.
The foundation held a reception earlier this month to celebrate the eight local nonprofits that are receiving the money.
The organizations include the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation, Christian Services, Classroom Central, HOPE in Lancaster, Lancaster County Society for Historical Preservation, Lancaster Promise Neighborhood, Palmetto Council-Boy Scouts of America and Samaritan’s Feet International.
