Some of my earliest public service was serving on the board of the Greenville County Mental Health Center – including as its chairman – in the early 1990s. I later served on the S.C. Mental Health Commission.
Mental illness had already been an issue I felt strongly about, but those positions gave me unique insights into the challenges facing the mentally ill and their loved ones.

Miss Flynn is the granddaughter of Guy Stacks of Lancaster and the late Carl Stacks. She is a 2010 graduate of Lancaster High School and earned a medical assistant’s degree in 2012. She works as a medical assistant.
The race to fill the soon-to-be-empty seat of South Carolina Superintendent of Education Dr. Mick Zais is among the most watched in the state this year.
Not only will the winner replace one of the most polarizing state school superintendents in recent memory, Zais’ elected successor will also oversee initiatives begun under his watch, most notably the reworking of the state’s curriculum and its accountability system.
