Two sentenced in Kershaw...

Almost two years after a double shooting in Kershaw left one man dead and another injured, two men were each sentenced this week to 30 years in prison for the crime.

Jerel Lamar Davis, Jr., 23, 717 E. Dunlap St., pleaded guilty Monday, May 13, to voluntary manslaughter, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime relating to the robbery and shooting death of 69-year-old Kershaw resident Harry Edward Blakeney, said 6th Circuit Solicitor Doug Barfield on Thursday, May 16.  

Man pleads guilty on federal gun...

COLUMBIA – A Lancaster man faces at least 15 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a gun possession charge Thursday, May 2.

William I. Satterwhite, 52, pleaded guilty in federal court to being a felon in possession of a firearm, a violation of the federal Title 18 law, according to a press release from U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles.

Nettles said U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie accepted the plea and will impose a sentence after she has reviewed the pre-sentence report, which will be prepared by the U.S. Probation Office.

Flags at half-staff on Wednesday

Flags across the nation will fly at half-staff on Wednesday, May 15, in honor of the Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Overcoming Extreme Obstacles

Mother’s Day is today, May 12, a holiday recognized nationally, thanks to a joint resolution signed by President Woodrow Wilson on May 8, 1914. That resolution designated the second Sunday in May as a day to celebrate mothers and their tireless dedication to their children and families. For one Lancaster mom, this Mother’s Day will probably have much more meaning than it used to.
Patty Penegar has two children, Wylie Penegar Jr., 20, and Brooke Penegar, 16. Wylie Jr. helps her run Extreme Automotive on Lynwood Drive. Brooke is an junior at Lancaster High School.

Drive-by shooting at Pardue...

Two Lancaster residents were not harmed after someone shattered their glass front door during an apparent drive-by shooting May 3. 

Police raced to the 1800 block of Pardue Street about 11:35 p.m. after receiving a 911 call that someone fired between five and six gunshots in that area, according to a Lancaster Police Department incident report. 

Officers arrived to find a large crowd in the area and also noticed a shattered screen door at a nearby apartment, the report said. 

County to arm animal control

Worried for the safety of the county’s animal control officers, who often face dangerous animals with no protection other than a catchpole, Lancaster County Council has decided it’s time to arm several of its employees.
Council unanimously voted at its Monday, May 13, meeting to approve having all animal control officers trained by the end of the month to carry long guns and to also be appropriately armed.

Fire burns home, outbuilding

A group of firefighters tackled a blaze at a Culp Landsford Road home at about 1:27 p.m. Thursday, May 16, though the damage was extensive.
Deputies responded to the 1300 block of Culp Landsford Road about a structure fire, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report. A 29-year-old man told deputies he started a fire to burn a stump in his back yard. He stated the fire then spread quickly to a small storage building a short distance from the stump and then burned a large portion of the back of his home, the report said.

GILBERT – The finality of a gut-wrenching sudden- death 4-3 loss in the Class AA state championship soccer match couldn’t tarnish a brilliant Indian Land High School soccer season Saturday afternoon, May 18.

As the dejected Warriors left Leonard Price Field following Bishop England’s narrow win over Indian Land, there was plenty of praise for the two-time Class AA Upper State champions.

GILBERT – Bishop England High School freshman Joel Bunting's golden goal was just that.

Bunting's nine-yard shot with 19 seconds left in the first of the two five-minute sudden-death overtime periods gave the Bishops a stunning 4-3 win over Indian Land for the Class AA state soccer championship at Gilbert High School's Leon Price Field on Saturday, May 18.
