Today's Opinions

  • All candidates should go the extra mile

In his May 30 column “Candidates should go extra mile for their constituents,” Bruce Miller made reference to he and Donald Huffman being the only House District 45 candidates who showed up at a special meeting sponsored by Lancaster County Economic Development Corp. (LCEDC).

The last time I checked there were five candidates in the race for House District 45. LCEDC sponsored a special meeting for the sole purpose of educating all candidates for the upcoming primary.

  • Sistare 'proven leader, honest, open, qualified'

Lancaster County District 7 residents have a tremendous opportunity to elect a County Council member who is a proven leader, honest, open and qualified. That person is Kathy Sistare. I have known Kathy for more than 35 years both personally and professionally.

  • Miller should do research before writing column

In Bruce Miller’s May 30th column “Candidates should go extra mile for their constituents,” it seems as though he should have been a staff writer for The Lancaster News – not a guest columnist. He’s had several columns in the paper, as well as the Carolina Gateway, lately. However, I felt the most recent article is one that warrants a response from a lifelong Lancaster County resident.

In his article, Mr. Miller makes a very bold statement by saying he and Donald Huffman are the only candidates running for House District 45.

  • Paramedics prove again they’re best in the state

A school shooting is a situation you hope will never occur, but if it does, county emergency response officials recently proved they’re capable of handling the daunting task.

Lancaster County paramedics Kelly Snipes and Greg Robinson with the county’s Emergency Medical Services recently captured first place in the 2008 statewide competition in Myrtle Beach.

  • Same status quo or step forward

Ever since I earned the right to vote at age 18, 35 years ago, I have faithfully exercised that right. That is a right that a lot of people in this world can only dream about. Like a lot of other people, I get flustered by people who gripe and complain about politics, only to learn they don’t even vote.

  • Don’t forget reassessment vote in 2005

I live in Lancaster County Council District 7 in the Buford area. I hope the people in District 7 and Lancaster County have not forgotten the reassessment in 2005 that Lancaster County Council had said it was not going to do. Then five council members changed their mind to do it before we could vote not to allow a larger increase than 15 percent for three years. The appraised value of one of our pieces of property went up 45 percent just because we live in the Buford area.

  • Sistare honest, trustworthy, civic-minded

During these difficult economic times, it is good to see concerned and qualified people running for Lancaster County Council. I have known Kathy Sistare for many years and know her to be honest, trustworthy and to have strong community spirit.

As a registered nurse, she has demonstrated her compassion for her fellow citizens.

  • Writer hopes thieves learn a lesson

I would like to thank the Lancaster Sheriff’s Office for helping me get my son’s dirt bike back. For some unknown reason, someone entered my yard and stole a dirt bike that belonged to my 7-year-old son.
