Today's Opinions

  • Let undocumented workers help pay for courthouse

I betcha just about everybody agrees that we need to renovate the Lancaster County Courthouse and build a new one sufficient to meet our needs for today and into the future.

Now, it seems that more issues are coming up. Judge Brooks Goldsmith had to make us start protecting our county buildings. Yes, they are county buildings, but those mentioned are located within the city limits of Lancaster.

The burden of protection should be shared by city and county law enforcement agencies.

  • Lancaster County needs public dover field

I grew up as a hunter and especially a dove hunter in Lancaster as a result of my father’s enthusiasm for the sport. He and I spent many years together on hot opening days of dove seasons sitting in a field listening to Clemson football and waiting for the birds.

  • Take time to celebrate the American worker

Schools in Lancaster County are closed Monday. And it is a holiday for most of us in the work force. The attachment we have to Labor Day is the extra day off. It also signifies the end of summer.

  • South Carolina needs to invest in small businesses

It’s no secret that times are hard in our community. Unemployment has been in double digits for a long time and Lancaster County is now ranked ninth in the state in unemployment.

  • School district again snubs American veterans

I am disgusted with the Lancaster County School District after seeing the school district calendar in The Lancaster News.

Once again the school leaders have chosen to show their disrespect and disdain for the millions of Americans who served and sacrificed in the armed forces.

The district has chosen not to close the schools in observance of Veterans Day and Memorial Day. However, they have no school on seven different dates for teacher work days and professional development days.

  • I want to be part of solution for repairing school system

For the past nine years, since my return from Maryland to my roots in Lancaster, I have been passionate about the educational needs of all children in Lancaster County. Especially the needs of at-risk youth, who based on school performance data, are not being met.

  • New courthouse doesn't need to be $33M palace

The fire at our courthouse pressed me to write this in fear that some on council will use this disaster to push a fool’s plan forward.

Some of our Lancaster County Council members believe they have found a way to pay for a new courthouse. I believe they need to wake up.

Spending $33 million for a courthouse is fiscally irresponsible. I believe the county could buy an unoccupied building and renovate it for a lot less money.

The new high school in Indian Land cost far less than they are planning to spend on this project.

  • Dream Team begins its second year

The Lancaster News wrote on April 15, 2007, that “this promises to be an extraordinary day in the history of Lancaster County sports.”

The newspaper was referring to the beginning of something that hundreds of local kids have been waiting on.

They have been waiting on their chance to play ball, their chance to do what every child wants to do but was unable to until now.

I am speaking of the Lancaster Dream Team.

The Lancaster Dream Team is the first-ever free sports program for children with mental and/or physical disabilities.
