Today's Opinions

  • Help us honor those who died for our freedom

We will have our 19th annual Memorial Day program at 3 p.m. today at Lancaster Memorial Park.

We ask our community members to join us in remembrance of those who have given so much to assure all our freedoms and now rest in cemeteries throughout this county and South Carolina. We remember them all.

  • Local resident boycotts IL gas stations

Indian Land residents are paying up to 17 cents more per gallon for gas than folks in Lancaster, Fort Mill (Valero charges $2.44), Rock Hill and even Tega Cay.

When you ask the business owners at the S.C. 160/U.S. 521 and Marvin Road and Doby’s Bridge intersections why, they say to attract North Carolina customers.

They don’t reduce prices to equal the other South Carolina communities. They only want to entice the North Carolina folks for profits while fleecing local residents. I would surmise that many of the South Carolina residents do not even know it.

  • Jaylen's family grateful for support

Jaylen Jackson, my 3-year-old granddaughter, was killed in a tragic way. It has been a little more than a month since she was shot while sitting in her car seat. She touched so many hearts. But I found out there are some rude people in this world who are trying to make a profit off my grandbaby’s death.

  • Man apologizes for criminal domestic violence act

Dear fellow citizens of Lancaster County:

I am humbly writing and seeking forgiveness from you all for being one who has committed the horrible act of criminal domestic violence in the past. It’s a terrible crime that destroys the very fabric of a family unit.

  • 1910 Census nosier than 2010

You hear it over and over: It is vital to our future and well-being to be counted every 10 years.

Although there has been little consistency over time, the results have always determined the number of congressmen each state is entitled to.

  • See Lancaster grateful for festival support

On May 7 and 8, the city of Lancaster celebrated community and the arrival of Spring with the first Red Rose Festival. Citizens and visitors enjoyed top entertainment on two stages, arts and craft vendors, kids activities, great food and a Koss Motorsports car show. Because of the foresight of our City Council, the festival provided a boost in our economy as well as community spirit.

  • Writer: Schmidt doesn't base opinion on facts

In reading Rudy Schmidt’s May 9 letter, “Conservatives are now moving again,” my first thought was that we’ve been down this road before.

The last time he “enlightened” us with his revisionest history I attempted to point out the historical facts. Apparently he felt that they would get in the way of his opinion. Sir, you are entitled to your own opinion, but not to your own facts.

Time is better spent in the library than with the entertainers on Fox News or talk radio.
