Today's Opinions

  • Sanford’s priorities skewed

I am outraged at Mark Sanford’s proposal to close the University of South Carolina at Lancaster as a way to cut costs in the state budget. My family is personally affected by his proposal.

  • Closing USCL would be Sanford’s biggest mistake

I think it is a shame that Gov. Mark Sanford would even consider closing the University of South Carolina Lancaster campus.

My daughter signed up for classes last week, and has a LIFE scholarship and a PELL grant. We make too much money for her to qualify for any other type of financial aid, yet we don’t make enough to pay tuition at a four-year state university. We make less than $50,000 per year, yet the government doesn’t take into consideration we are a family of seven and we have to pay rent, utilities, car payments, etc.

  • Agency grateful for Shoebox for Seniors donations

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful people who donated gifts to Shoebox for Seniors, a project sponsored by the Lancaster County Council on Aging.

  • Goodwill grateful for donations

We live in an extraordinarily caring community. While that fact is not new, it is certainly worth repeating and celebrating. Let me add one more example.

  • USCL campus prepared writer for navel career

I read Jenny Hartley’s wonderful article on Gov. Mark Sanford’s proposal to close the University of South Carolina at Lancaster campus.

As a 2001 graduate, (associate’s degree in science), it gave me the education I needed to have a successful naval career (seven years, making E-6 in six years).

USCL helped me complete my bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering technology from Thomas Edison State College.

  • Smith top of class on hardwood

In South Carolina, high school football has the legendary John McKissick.

His counterpart in Palmetto State hoops would likely be Great Falls High School’s John Smith.

McKissick is the legendary Summerville High School head football coach, who is the winningest prep football coach in the country.

Smith, a Lancaster native and a former Lancaster High School basketball star, stands just as tall in his respective sport.

Smith, in 40 seasons guiding the Red Devils, has more than 800 wins – an average of 20 victories a season.

  • USCLancaster is a model for other schools

Editor’s note: Sen. Mick Mulvaney presented this letter to Gov. Mark Sanford on opening day of 2009 S.C. General Assembly.

I received your proposed budget late last week, and the courtesy call from your office indicating that you had proposed the closure of the University of South Carolina at Lancaster campus.

  • IL library now open

Although this sounds clichéd, the excitement really was palpable at the ribbon-cutting for the new Del Webb Library at Indian Land.

Even before 3 p.m., the 54 chairs in the front were filled to capacity.

Others had to stand on their tiptoes, craning their necks for a view of the historic event.

But the ribbon-cutting – the symbolic culmination of several years of planning and work by the Lancaster County Library’s board, its staff and many others in the community – was not the main event Sunday.
