  • Foundation seeks to help those in need

One woman sleeps in her car at night. A man without a car walked nine miles to HOPE requesting food and other necessities.

There are many similar stories. Elaine Adkins, executive director of HOPE, shared some of the stories with the Breakfast Rotary Club Wednesday morning.

HOPE, which stands for Helping Other People Effectively, distributes food and utility assistance to those in need in Lancaster.

  • Relax, Sanford’s proposal just that – proposal

This is to all the letter writers concerning the Gov. Mark Sanford’s budget cutting proposal. Relax, Little Red Hen, the sky is not falling.

The governor’s proposal is just that – a proposed way to cut the budget. Unfortunately this proposal included closing the University of South Carolina at Lancaster and some others that should not be closed.

The governor did not do all of this on his own. It was a proposal drafted by some adviser as a means to cut the budget, which must be done, and unfortunately the governor did not delete that part of the draft.

  • USCL an asset, Willis is not

The University of South Carolina at Lancaster is an asset to the community. Steve Willis is not.

  • Sanford wants to close county’s greatest asset

I am writing in regard to Gov. Mark Sanford’s proposal to close the University of South Carolina at Lancaster. I was born and raised in Lancaster County, attended Lancaster County Public schools and graduated from Lancaster High School.

I enrolled in the fall of 2000 at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster as a freshman.

  • Don’t let Gov. Sanford amputate USCL campus

I read with great interest the article on Gov. Sanford’s proposal to close the University of South Carolina at Lancaster.

The question just begs to be asked: Does Gov. Sanford live in South Carolina? Is he interested in each of the counties that make up the state of South Carolina? It sounds by his comments that he needs a little educating himself.

  • President Obama inspires fifth-grader

I am writing to you about the history that happened Tuesday that changed the world. I am part of a majority Democrat family.

These last two years of history I have been living through are unbelievable. First, we had an African-American candidate to run. Then we had an African-American to make it as one of the top two candidates. Then, if all that wasn’t enough, President Barack Obama won the presidential election.

  • Education important to our children

I am so mad at Gov. Mark Sanford for thinking of closing the University of South Carolina at Lancaster campus. It really makes me mad. Add to that the county is building a new courthouse. There are existing buildings that could suffice for that use. Our children and grandchildren need the campus to expand their education. Higher education is so important to our community and our children. Our children are our future and Gov. Sanford wants to take this campus from them. What is this telling our children?

I agree with Steve Willis. Gov. Sanford is certified squirrel bait.

  • Obama ushers in new era

Today is a day that many people thought they’d never live to see – a day when a black man holds the highest elective office in the country.

So much has already been said about this fact since the historic election of Barack Obama as president in November. But it’s a milestone that can’t be overstated, considering how divisive an issue race has been since the founding of this country.
