  • Walters helps Lancers earn elite status

    The University of South Carolina at Lancaster’s golf program is only in its second season since the sport was resurrected in 2007.

    In a short time, the Lancers’ golfers have come far.

    In its first season, coach Rick Walters’ team posted a 12-5 record and finished as the Region X runner-up to national power Louisburg (N.C.)

    The Lancers’ effort earned them a trip to the nationals in Lake Chautauqua, N.Y.

  • Writer glad to be smiling again

    Going to a dentist for a six-month checkup is routine for people with a decent income or dental insurance. I was among that group at one time.

    People use to call me the sunshine lady because I smiled all the time. I believe that a smile can have a positive effect on people. It does me. Even if you don’t feel like smiling, force yourself and after a while you start feeling better about yourself.

  • Motorcycle riders asks drivers to pay attention

    Edward “Eddie Boy” Cook. Peggy Landry. James “Mickey” Funderburk. They had a lot in common. They were all from Lancaster. They were all in their 40s. They were all Harley Davidson owners. They all died in motorcycle accidents.

    Cook, Landry and Funderburk also fit the profile of a recent study on the increase of motorcycle deaths across the nation. A Gannett News Service (GNS) analysis of federal accident reports says “dying on a motorcycle could soon become a predominantly middle-age phenomenon.”

  • Wrier urges people to drive safely

    I read where yet another person was killed in an auto wreck. Could this wreck have been prevented? The answer is obvious. Considering all the wrecks in South Carolina, everyone should be required to take drivers education.

    Bad roads are some reasons for the wrecks. When a driver is passing illegally you have to ask yourself if that driver took drivers education. Was that person intoxicated, on drugs or talking on a cell phone?

    I am not a resident of this neighborhood, but my young son frequents this neighborhood quite often because it is where his best friend lives.

    I would like to know where this reader obtained his information because it is obvious he did not read the entire story.

    Americans are calling for a new direction, and Democrats in Congress are delivering. This month, we passed a plan to balance the budget by 2012.

    When President George Bush took office seven years ago, we presented him an advantage that few presidents have ever enjoyed: a budget in surplus by $236 billion. His economists looked out 10 years and saw nothing but surpluses, $5.6 trillion in all.

  • Writer commends deputies for handling of dog situation

    This is in response to Eric Grace attacking the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office and county Animal Control officers in his letter, “Reader appalled by dog shooting.”

    Mr. Grace, the sheriff’s deputies were called out because Animal Control is not staffed 24/7.

    I think the deputy acted appropriately in defending himself and others.

    They took an oath to serve and protect all the citizens of Lancaster County. If the dog made an attempt to harm someone, then he acted accordingly.
