Today's Opinions

  • Harsh winter to blame for pot hole problems

I share letter writer Pete Melton’s concern about our roads. The problem is due to nature. Rain falls and water settles into small cracks in the road surface. The water freezes and expands and the small cracks become big holes.

And this cycle will occur over and over, as we have seen during this terrible winter. I don’t blame our officials. I think they do what they can.

  • Main Street nostalgia fades in our big box stores

I enjoyed Sunday’s edition of The Lancaster News and the articles related to Main Street. Those two blocks of Lancaster County real estate still exists, although any resemblance to those days of yesteryear is purely coincidental.

One might say, we got a little too big for our britches. Old was out, new was in. Parking on Main Street was too much trouble. Small, family-owned businesses struggled. Family elders passed away and younger family members had other interests. Shoppers wanted convenience, everything under one roof, so to speak.

  • Democrats must choose strong leader

I have read that President Barack Obama is weak and that Obama’s actions may put the United States in physical war against Russia because of his stance on Ukraine. I agree with the first point, but I hope the second point will not come true!

I am a Democrat who voted for Obama twice. It seems every day that goes by, I see how stupid the second vote was.

  • Corruption abounds in government

It’s been another week of circumstances which scream corruption. First, Lois Lerner was back to testify or actually recite the Fifth Amendment on the IRS scandal.

When the show was over and meeting closed, Rep. Elijah Cummings pitched a fit because he wanted to ask some questions. When Rep. Darrell Issa turned the microphones back on, Cummings actually had no questions for the witness. He simply wanted to make a statement about the proceedings.

  • Why doesn’t council care?

Lancaster County Council voted 5-2 on March 10 to approve first reading of Mattamy Homes’ proposal to build a large housing development on the TreeTops property in Van Wyck.

The puzzling thing is that during the discussion they showed quite conclusively that they understood all the arguments against this use of the property and then voted 5-2 that they don’t care.

The question is: Why don’t they care?

  • Don’t cheat our children

If you own a home in Lancaster County and are receiving the residential rate of 4 percent, please be aware that you do not qualify for your lower tax rates and exemptions if you rent or lease your home for more than 14 days.

  • What I love and hate about proms

I loved some things about prom when I was a principal early in my career.

I loved seeing how hard juniors and their teacher sponsors worked to transform a plain banquet hall into a magical, glittering place.

I loved watching the limos pull up, full of students so excited about a night they’d been looking forward to for years.

I loved seeing the boys decked out in their tuxes and the girls in fairy-tale gowns.

  • What’s happened to America?

Several days ago, The Observer printed an article on marijuana in North Carolina. If this is okayed, it will make 21 states that have made medical marijuana OK.

Who will govern who gets it and who doesn’t?

Who will govern who grows it? Why is it that we fought 40 or 50 years to keep this stuff from crossing our border from Mexico?

The reason is that our leaders have mismanaged our tax money to the point that they are going to tax something that used to be illegal to try to ease the deficit they have created by wasteful spending.
