  • Column: Debating what causes decline of middle class

I would like to thank William St. Louis for his Feb. 21 response to my Feb. 17 column. I sense that we may be close to agreement on several issues.
I see the erosion of the middle class, and so does Mr. St Louis. The point of disagreement seems to be my observation that many are focused only on leisure and recreation. Leisure and recreation are not evil in themselves. However, when these become an obsessive priority in life, it may reflect a sense of frustration and helplessness.

  • Column: We’re not dumb hicks and Yankee carpetbaggers

There was a time when the only discord in Van Wyck was how you should pronounce the name. Van Wick, Van Wack, Van Wike, there are plenty of arguments and plenty of people who “just know” the right way to say it.
OK, there are also people here still arguing the rights and wrongs of a case involving a dog that’s been dead for 20 years.

  • Letter: 2nd Amendment simple, absolute

I’d like to know what part of “shall not be infringed” do people not understand? I am sick of the know-it-all leftist elitists telling me we should have more “sensible gun regulations,” and the lemmings that go along with that.
Read the Constitution. We have a right to bear arms. We have a right to protect ourselves, not only against intruders in or on our property, but against a tyrannical, ever more intrusive, right-abolishing government.

  • Letter: Democrats do not respect Constitution

Michael Jedson’s Feb. 17 letter was interesting.
He made the case for the hypocrisy of the Republicans who “say time and time again that the Constitution is their Bible” and go after President Obama when he issues executive orders that usurp the legislative powers given to the Congress by the Constitution. But now those same Republicans oppose the Constitution in saying that Obama should not get a chance to carry out his Constitutional duty of picking the successor to Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court.

  • Column: The middle class is dying

While reading Dr. L. Brooks Walter’s Feb. 17 column, “Maybe too late to forestall social, financial collapse,” I found the need to make the following observations.

  • Column: USCL: Great opportunity, great value

A note accompanying a recent gift from one of our donors included this perceptive sentence: “The rapidly escalating cost of pursuing an education at a four year, residential university emphasizes the importance of offering an alternative educational opportunity like USCL.”

  • Letter: Consider the source on Walker’s columns

Dr. L. Brooks Walker has become a regular guest columnist in The Lancaster News. In his most recent column bashing yet another Democrat, he alludes to the fact that Bill Clinton “was busy disgracing himself.” My grandfather always told me to consider the source.

  • Letter: Thanks, Rubenstein, for saving monuments

I was 68 years old before I actually saw the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial in Washington. They took my breath away. These are only monuments made of stone, but there was a feeling of awe as I stood where millions before me have stood to honor these presidents.
