  • Altman’s drive took him to top

    Buford High School senior wrestler Dylan Altman has a coveted gold medal to show for his persistence.
    Altman, the Jackets’ 132-pounder, captured an individual state championship as he won the gold medal on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Anderson Civic Center.
    A year prior, Altman fell short in a bid to capture the 120-pound Class AAA state title to end his junior campaign.
    Altman used his miss at the shot of “grabbing the brass ring” to power his run to the state championship this year.

    It’s no secret that the majority of us will need some kind of assistance as we age. Imagine returning home from the hospital for recovery after being treated for a stroke.   • Show respect by pulling over in funeral procession

    I have noticed recently while watching a few funerals that a lot of people don’t pull over while the procession passes. Also, there is only a police car leading the funeral. There are none at intersections to block traffic.
    This is the South and we have always shown respect for the deceased. I think everyone should, at least, take a few minutes from their busy day to pull over and show respect for the deceased.
    There should be an officer at each intersection, so the funeral procession doesn’t have to stop and be held up in traffic.

  • Don’t forget to visit senior citizens

    I recently witnessed something that made me aware of  how important it is to visit our senior citizens when they are sick at home or in a hospital.
    I encourage everyone to go by and check on them, especially church members. As church members, we should go to church and worship and then go out and serve our fellow man.
    Please, let’s not lose sight of what Jesus wants us to do – be Christ-like.

  • Whittlesey should do some research

    Many thanks to Franklin Whittlesey for his latest informational column, this one on the subject of  how guns are made. I had no idea!
    But I do have one idea: Mr. Whittlesey should reduce his viewing time of Fox News and perhaps switch to reading some newspapers and news magazines at the Del Webb Library so as to escape his fantasy world and get some of his facts straight.

  • Red Ventures located in Indian Land, not Fort Mill

    Red Ventures gets my heart rate up, and not for a good reason. Every time you see them in a newspaper article, television or on the radio, advertising for one of their big job fairs, they always say they are in Fort Mill.
    There are very few residents of Indian Land or even Lancaster County working in Red Ventures. They have not found qualified applicants in our county, even after special efforts have been implemented for training classes at York Tech.
    Now they want the road to their buildings named Red Ventures.

  • Public notices – information citizens should know about

    Transparency in government is getting a big push these days as South Carolina citizens demand improved access to public meetings and documents.
    Both houses of the Legislature are studying reform and the Governor’s Commission on Ethics Reform has issued recommendations on ethics and openness.
    However, one important area of open government is often forgotten, and that is public notices.

  • Support Rep. Taylor’s FOI reform bill now in Legislature

    The FOI reform bill now working its way through the state legislative process is a good bill that would give citizens faster and more affordable access to public information.
    Spearheaded by Rep. Bill Taylor, R-Aiken, the bill would prevent agencies from charging fees that exceed actual copying costs or exceed the local prevailing rate.
    The fee schedules would have to be posted online and charges for document searches could not exceed the prorated hourly salary of the lowest paid employee with skills and training to perform the request.
