Today's Opinions

  • Obamacare to have a major impact on businesses, families

Many Lancaster Republicans have contacted me to express their displeasure at the recent column by Phil Noble, which attacked Republican legislators for their opposition to Obamacare.
Noble has a long history as a paid political operative and past Democratic candidate for several offices, so one would suppose he has a bias.
While that is understandable, trying to suggest that those opposed to Obamacare are on the same level as racists and those who provoked a bloody civil war, is inexcusable and just plain wrong.

  • Disagree with other’s view, but don’t insult

I’d like to respond to Crystal Stango’s March 22 letter, “Whittlesey’s gun control column ‘inane filler.’ ” Why is it that liberals can’t have a discussion without name calling or insulting the person who sees issues differently.
The entire letter belittled him. Why can’t you submit a letter that has a different view than yours – without the insults?
It’s liberals like you who live in a fantasy land when you think making another gun law will prevent shootings? How’s the war on drugs doing?

  • Let’s stop government from taking our rights

The laws being proposed by some self-gratifying politicians will not do anything to prevent mass shootings like Sandy Hook, Ct.
We have laws that  aren’t being enforced. Why have new laws that do more to hurt the honest, hard working, law abiding gun owners?
A firearm in the hands of a law-abiding citizen can deter crime. The same firearm in the hands of a criminal or evil person will cause pain and grief for all. There are no facts that banning firearms and magazines will stop crime.

  • Help stay on track in battle with KLS

A highlight of the county high school track season takes center stage, Saturday, April 20, on the Lancaster High School track at the Rice Athletics Building.
The seventh annual KLS Running for Ryan features the county track meet at LHS. Boys and girls squads from Andrew Jackson, Buford, Indian Land and host Lancaster will be there to earn track bragging rights for the 2013 season.
In the past few years, Lancaster County has produced state champions and state qualifiers, and the annual meet seems to bring out the best from around the county.

  • Forgiveness offers political rebirth for former governor

The power of Christian forgiveness – it’s a redeeming force in South Carolina politics.
Former Gov. Mark Sanford, who was caught in an Argentinean tryst in June 2009, is now the GOP nominee to fill the 1st Congressional District’s seat. Voters made that decision in a GOP runoff election on April 2.
Sanford will face Elizabeth Colbert Busch, winner of the Democratic primary, in the May 7 general election.

  • Collins is a good choice to lead USCL

The leadership for the future of the University of South Carolina Lancaster will be handled by a familiar figure.
Dr. Walt Collins III, USCL assistant dean of student affairs, was selected from a field of three candidates to replace Dr. John Catalano and lead USCL into its promising future.
Catalano, who guided USCL as dean for 11 years, announced his retirement in June, effective the end of the year.
Collins, a Clinton, N.C. native, has been a key part of USCL since 2002.

  • Upgrades under way on website

Transparency has become just another buzzword to some in government these days.
A few years ago, before it ever became a government buzzword, I launched a project to make the details of how government spends money readily available and transparent to citizens in South Carolina.
As the state’s comptroller general – more commonly described as its chief financial officer – it seemed only natural to me that South Carolinians ought to be able to see the full picture of how government officials are spending the public’s hard-earned tax dollars.

  • Writer concerned about smart meter installation

I live in a large development in Indian Land, and have York Electric Cooperative as my distribution provider.
On Saturday, March 9, York Electric made a number of computer-generated calls to multiple customers here to inform us that they would be coming around this neighborhood soon to install “smart” meters. As it turned out after making a call to their office, “soon” meant Wednesday or Thursday of the upcoming week.
