  • Column: Lancaster County has best government money can buy

“We have the best government that money can buy.” Was Mark Twain a resident of Lancaster County? I don’t think so, but at times his famous quote seems to fit our system of government.
    Here are but two examples:
◆ You may recall this past December when an out-of-state developer was caught violating the laws of Lancaster County. Those laws, adopted in 2007, were to protect the endangered natural habitat of the Carolina heelsplitter mussel on Six Mile Creek.

  • Column: Wilt throws support behind Stroble

Iclearly lost the Republican primary election on June 14, running behind both Terry Graham and Melvin Stroble. I can accept this result, but it leaves me with the question of how to respond to my supporters asking for my recommendation as to which candidate to support in the runoff election on June 28.

  • Column: Graham seeks your vote in runoff

Iam Terry Graham and I am running for Lancaster County Council District 1.
I would like to thank all the voters who voted in the primary on June 14.
I received 46.1 percent of the vote, and the second place candidate received 22.42 percent. My support was broad-based, from both new and old residents. However, because I did not reach the 50 percent plus one threshold, there must be a runoff on June 28.

  • Column: Blackmon touts his experience, ideas

In running for the Lancaster County Auditor’s Office, I have greatly appreciated the warm hospitality shown by so many and appreciate their concerns for a modernized auditor’s office, which truly puts taxpayers first. My background of success at managing operations for a large and growing construction company, senior management roles in the state Department of Revenue and record of community service has given me the ability to manage the auditor’s office, while bringing needed reforms and planning for future growth.

  • Letter: Neighbor supports Graham in District 1 race

After a close race for the Lancaster County Council seat in District 1, I’d like to express my support for Terry Graham.
As a neighbor and businessman in my community, I have been very impressed by the integrity and authenticity of this man. He’s the real deal!
With so many challenges facing the county due to the explosive growth in the Panhandle, our County Council is in need of leadership. This council seat must have a leader who is willing to work with other members to address the issues and provide solutions.

  • Letter: Hunter Wallace deserves promotion

The runoff election for county auditor is Tuesday, June 28, and the citizens of Lancaster County should be thankful that someone like Susan Hunter Wallace is one of the final two candidates.
Her experience as deputy auditor for the past six years of her career with the county will allow her to transition into the auditor’s job with ease, knowledge and experience.
Please consider giving Susan Hunter Wallace the promotion she has worked for and deserves.

    James Baker
    Lancaster

  • Letter: Murphy supports Blackmon in auditor’s runoff

I would like to encourage everyone to please get out and vote in the primary runoff election for the county auditor’s race on Tuesday, June 28.

  • Column: The world I grew up in is long gone

What is truth? It seems a simple question, and yet truth is the elusive puff of smoke everyone is seeking through layers of rhetoric and excuses.
Why is there no beacon of truth anymore? Once we thought that electing good, honest leaders and trusting them assured a great society, and justice would be served by a Supreme Court if all other courts in the land failed. But now we see judges appointed based more on their political leanings than their interpretations of the law, and those good, honest leaders seem to be out of touch with their constituents.
