Today's Opinions

  • Republicans offer future for all ages

Lancaster County Republicans welcome Matt Moore, the new chair of the S.C. Republican Party. Moore replaces Chad Connelly, who just took a role at the Republican National Committee.

  • We can all help curb underage drinking

My name is Caroline Howey and I am doing an internship with the Lancaster County Partners for Youth Foundation, and assisting with the Office of Research and Development at the school district.
During my work here, I learned of the work of the Coalition for Healthy Youth, a network of public, private, civic, and faith-based representatives focused on preventing underage drinking and drug use within the county.

  • Boy Scouts turn out great leaders

Growing up in a Southern Baptist church, I was a member of Troop 70, a Boy Scout Troop sponsored by my church.  To tell the truth, I wasn’t a Scout who earned bunches of merit badges and Order of the Arrow, but I enjoyed the brotherhood bond from my fellow scouts. I guess I liked overnight camping, campfires and snipe hunting the most.
Sure, we sometimes did a few rowdy things like pulling up tent stakes and swiping snacks from rival troops, but I never encountered a “gay” scout.

  • Why is death so expensive?

Death isn’t cheap these days. Critics say regulations of South Carolina’s funeral industry block competition for those who want to buy an inexpensive casket. But they likely won’t get a sympathetic ear from a state lawmaker/funeral director who has successfully pushed funeral-related bills in recent years.

  • Citizens deserve better from judges

To all of our so-called district judges – your system of dealing out justice sucks.
Once again, we read in The Lancaster News where another career violent criminal is set loose to do more violent crimes – even more violent crimes than the ones before.
The article about the Samuel thug (Markevious Demond Samuel) being out of jail after being convicted on so may previous counts of violent crimes makes me and every other Lancaster County citizen sick to our stomachs.

  • Fathers deserve own day

We search the various greeting cards for just the right words. Words that adequately reflect how we feel in our hearts for that important man.
Today is that important man’s special day – Father’s Day. It’s a day set aside to thank that man who plays such a pivotal role in our lives. He provides and protects his family. His love is unconditional. A father’s daily presence in children’s lives provides a stable family foundation.

  • Time to fix education in S.C.

Jon Butzon is a big guy and he has some big ideas about how we can fix education in South Carolina. He should know because for years he’s run the Charleston Education Network – he’s seen it, lived it and thought about it. He knows where we are as a state; he knows what works and, most importantly, what doesn’t work.

  • It’s important to sustain hope when facing cancer

Hope is a curious thing. It’s about looking forward to something positive and refusing to give up. It’s about persisting in the face of adversity, even when the odds and the facts seem to be working against you. It’s about creating positive energy that can nourish both body and soul.
