  • Letter: VFW Auxiliary thanks Talbots for fundraiser

The Capt. John P. Monahan VFW Post 12136 Auxiliary would like to thank Talbots of Blakeney for the opportunity to raise money for our post relief fund.
Talbots generously gave our auxiliary a percentage of its sales Nov. 10 in honor of Veterans Day. Our auxiliary members were able to talk to Talbots’ customers to share our reasons for the fundraiser. Because of this opportunity, we will be able to help veterans and their families in need.

  • Column: Norman says GOP tax-reform plan is simple, fair

It is no secret that our tax system is broken.
Did you know that the tax code has not been fully reformed in over 30 years? Right now, we have the opportunity of a lifetime to achieve fair, comprehensive tax reform and make the system work for all Americans.
Politicians in Washington have a spending problem, not an income problem. We have to distinguish the needs versus wants, which conservatives have promised the American people.

  • Letter: Thanks for tribute to America’s vets

Thank you, Lancaster News, for your tribute to U.S. veterans in Wednesday’s paper. The stories, pictures and beautiful ads in the section “Honoring Veterans” were all deeply inspiring.
We are living in dispiriting times. When an evil monster can descend upon a house of worship and massacre a congregation of the faithful, there is no reverence for God or human life.

  • Letter: Concern over ILHS runners’ attire, funding

I want to share with you my support of the Indian Land High School girls cross country program and the need for schools to continue to focus on girls athletics and the importance of equal internal and school funding support of such programs.
Yesterday (Nov. 4), I witnessed many cross country schools attending the S.C. state championship race in Columbia. What a wonderful day and event for the kids and showing of fan support.

  • Letter: Name new school after county astronaut

My choice for naming the new school would be Charles Duke Elementary.

  • Column: A young boy stops to thank WWII veteran

Last week, I was having breakfast downtown with an old friend. Usually six of us meet for breakfast on Friday morning, but four were scattered from South America to doctor’s offices, so the two of us carried on.
While we had coffee and waited for our eggs and bacon, we covered a number of topics – one was about World War II.

  • Column: Don’t take shortcut of blaming mass killings on mental illness

After the latest mass shooting on American soil, those looking for reasons why this happened (and in some cases trying to cover for what many people think is the real problem) are trotting out the old standby boogieman – mental illness.
In some cases, it’s easier for them to wrap their mind around why this sort of thing keeps happening in this country if they can quickly and easily place blame on a cause such as mental illness.

  • Letter: VFW Auxiliary invites all to fundraiser

The Capt. John P. Monahan VFW Post 12136 Auxiliary is partnering with Talbots of Blakeney for a Charity Day Event. The event takes place today – Nov. 10.
